Recently I have buyed mobility radeon 4870 (from asus w90) for my Clevo M570TU. Card looks like this :![]()
But I face some problems with it. Seller told it is laptops Bios problem and it can be patched somehow.
The issue looks so:
When I start laptop, Windows is launching, there is a picture on the screen and everything seems to be OK, but some seconds pass and CapsLock NumLK and ScrLk start blinking and laptop shuts down. The same thing happens even when I enter Bios, after 15-20 second it starts to beep and shuts down. Looks like laptop doesn't know that video card is installed, Because the same thing happens when I launch a laptop without any graphics card. Also it's not recognised in Bios as a VGA card, only writes its bios version "5557" which is wrong.
Can this be solved somehow?

bump.... any suggestions?

May some chips/components on the back get overheated?
-
I would suggest to flash the card with a Clevo version radeon 4870 bios.
-
IT might work with an external monitor. But the problem is the vBIOS.
So far not one reseller has helped us with a proper 4870M Bios. There are Clevo 4870M drivers though. -
Also I will have to take the card to service centre to be flashed, do not think I can flash the card within 20 seconds until laptop shuts down -
-
No, it's just the vBIOS. There was someone on this forum who tested a 4850M in the M570TU and managed to get it to work.
Use the search function. -

Everyone knows the search function of NBR doesn't work.. Better off using google

Its definitely a BIOS problem, just like the m570ru doesn't support the gtx 280m fully and the w870cu doesn't support the gt 240m or many other non standard MXM cards.
There is no such Clevo 4870 vBIOS. There is an Alienware vBIOS which may or may not work, there is also an MSI vBIOS for the 4850m here:
Download br32415.001.rar for free on uploading.com
But I do not advise that.
Have you sent a PM to .Netroller3d? -
Yes, I have contacted him, but looks like he can't help me. I have discribed him the problem and hi answered: "Sounds like the BIOS is using a whitelist of allowed MXM cards. Whitelisting and blacklisting are not standardized MXM behaviors (in fact, both are explicitly forbidden in the MXM specification), and I have no experience with whitelist removal. It is definitely not an MXM structure issue, especially since I've yet to see *any* ATI/AMD card that even detects the presence of an MXM structure. ATI/AMD cards are basically proprietary, model-specific graphics cards on an MXM-sized PCB." -
PM me your bios...I may be able to take a look once I find a moment.

@ zeera I double checked my voltage.
Core voltage while in bios = 1.146V
Mem voltage whilte in bios = 1.86V
Also my 4870 came with a small metal thing on the back that was meant to cool a few components, did yours have that? -

It's a small metal square with a thermal pad on one side. It's stuck to some power components on the back of the card.
Looks like it's not a stock item. -

Sorry, I was thinking of sending you something like that but I didn't have time. Its in the top left corner of the card while the card is flipped over and the pins are closest to you. You have to be careful not to short 2 resistors that are on either side of like 8 black things which are what heat up.
These cards include a really thick backplate which I would have sent you but it simply wont fit in any laptop except the w90 I'm guessing.
On the m570tu you already have a copper backplate so you can just scratch off some of the tape and use a thermal pad. -

Niff are you able to take a photo of the backplate and is it available for sale?
I would like one if I can get it to fit and if it cools the ram on the back.
Zeera I'll take a photo of my card later on tonight. -

How is it supposed to be a BIOS problem if computer posts and starts to load windows...
So any updates to the story? -
Ok, found this thread explaining that temperatures are displayed differently causing thermal shutdown.
