So yesterday my clevo M570U was working just fine. I go to turn it on today, and windows has problems loading. Upon my next attempt BIOS setup as well as a windows xp pro install disk inform me that it cannot detect any hard disk drive.

?? Why on earth would this randomly happen? Can i fix it or is my HD just fried?

I think you will need to do futher testing.
Is the HD never detected now, or do you manage to boot up from times to times?
Either some system files are corrupted (which can be at worst solved by reinstalling windows) or you have a real hw issue.
Did you try to open up the back of the laptop to check proper connections to the HD, check that the mechanics engage when power is on, and that it doesnt make some weird noise?

Is your HDD making any kind of noises? Does the bios recognize it? If windows starts to load you can use some of the utilities on your Windows CD to try repair your Windows installation.

Go into the BIOS (note: if you've never dug in there, call your rep/place of ordering and ask for a tech to walk through it with you) and check to see if the BIOS recognizes your HDD.

    If it does:
Windows is probably busted. Let us know, step-by-step from power on, what happens.

    If it doesn't:
Talk to your rep/tech person about a possible RMA for a new HDD.

    Cheers,

Thanks for all the help guys. Ill investigate further to give you guys a little more information. What I know now is that sometimes BIOS detects the HDD. Also, all fans are working properly and the hdd isnt making any weird noises.

When I get a free hour or so Ill play around with it to give a better more clear description of exactly whats happening.

    thanks for the help

    UPDATE:

I finally got some time to investigate a little more what has been happening with my clevo. I took out and put the battery back in and started my computer. BIOS did not recognize the HDD. (I checked the connections and theyre fine). The computer was rebooted and BIOS then DID recognize the HDD. This seems to be a cycle of the hdd, not being recognized often, then randomly showing up.

hope this helps for a diagnosis at least a little considering im still at a complete loss

If you can not see your HD in the BIOS most of the time or if you are getting a message like “Operating System not found” or “Can not detect Hard Disk” most of the time chances are you have a damaged HD.

Here is my suggestion before you request a RMA, depending on the HD brand you have you need to get their Diagnostics tools. If you have a Seagate HD just go to Seagate website and download their Seatools, if you have a Hitachi go to their website and download their diagnostic software, I think it is called HD Fitness tool and if you have another brand just go to their website and download their diagnostic tools. Keep in mind that the diagnostic tools you download are most probably an ISO image that you have to burn with a program like Nero to make a bootable CD. Once you burn them just put them in your DVD Drive and boot up. They will tell you what is wrong with your HD after they perform tests provided the HD is detected by the BIOS. Hope you have another computer or you can at least boot up once and get to the Internet with your Laptop.

    Good Luck
