    Hello everyone,

I've visited this forum many a time for advice but I can't find the solution to the following problem:

I have a two-year old Clevo M570U. It's Pioneer DVR-K16 has failed and I would like to replace it, however A.) I dont want another K16 and B.) They are discontinued as far as I can tell.

What would be a good DVD replacement that will fit my notebook?

    Thank you for your time,
    Geoff

You can use just about any standard slimline DVDRW/ODD. You may have to switch the bezels around between the drive you have and your new one and maybe some of the mounting brackets.

You can find them on eBay or Google and many other places. :)

Alright well in that case, firstly do you have any recommendations for the burner? Also, is the bevel switching easy to do? (Sorry I'm a big desktop person so notebooks are still foreign to me)

    Thank you again,
    Geoff

The bezel is pretty easy to switch. There is usually a clip on the lower left side that you press in and the bezel will come off. You can use just about any slimline DVDRW drive or even Blue Ray if you would like. (just make sure it is PATA and not SATA)

If you to go Google and type "slimline dvdrw" you will find many stores offering them.

    That's another question: Blu-Ray drives.

I've recently read about the 16 layer Blu-Ray so I wonder if there's any point in buying the old Blu-Ray burners instead of waiting for the new ones.

    ~Aeioe

Also, Sony or Pioneer for burners? Who does better slimline burners?

if you are ready to spend $4000 and 5 years waiting on a blu-ray drive, I'll say wait for it, otherwise, get the regular one now for $300

If you are looking for a BLuRay drive I know RK Computers has some left over that will work in that chassis he is trying to sell. You might get a good deal with a quick email or PM.

If I can make a deal below $300, I would definitely get one.

Nirvana, call him up and tell him K|N's said you would sell me this drive for $299.99, you MUST honor that price or face the consequences!

    No really, I'm serious.

aeioe: That drive will work no problem. Just make sure to keep your CD faceplate (like already mentioned) so you can have the one that fits properly.

I guess you've heard of RPC1 and RPC2 protection these devices have? Nasty things that are a 'necessary evil' (I'm told).

If you have Vista and HDCP compliant hardware, you've got nothing to worry about - you can watch high def. But if not, you might want to see if any player appears on the market that does not 'force' you to upgrade your TV (/OS/any other hardward along the supply chain to your eyes). Unless you only plan to watch on the 15'' screen, in which case no issue :)

Thank you so much! I'm going to order it this weekend and try it out next week.

I received more straight answers today than I have the entire last two weeks elsewhere.

One other point before I settle on one:

How do I determine whether I need a Primary or Slave and how do I figure it out on models that dont have it listed?

it needs to be at master setting not cable select or slave so 0 and not 1 in the hardware section of the odd in the device manager imo the best odd slimline right now is the optiarc drives. i have a whole bunch of drives i have tested and the optiarc or the samsung s082h would be my top picks. to many issues with the pioneer slim lines right now from what im told
