After 3 years of hissing my ventilator suddenly sounds different. It's now more of a rattling sound than hissing. I never cleaned the ventilator. Could it be the reason? And if so, how should I go about it (cleaning)?

    Thank you for any suggestions.

You should clean it several times a year, so yes.

It might be the fan going bad.

i clean mine out every 4-6 months and theres always dust lurking around the fan.
when you say youve never cleaned the ventilator do you mean the copper coloured vents at the back. how about the actual fan itself inside, have you cleaned that out at all.
if not then you have been so lucky that its not overheated or even jammed the fan after 3 years.
remove the base plate and with a tin of compressed air blow around the inards and outside the fan or even better gently unscrew the fan and give it a good blowing out.

Well, as per suggestions above, I thoroughly cleaned up the fan and vents. The rattling has significantly decreased, but it hasn't disappeared altogether.

@mysn: Thanks, should it get worse again, I will remember your offer.

PS: Still, even after 3 years - what an awesome machine! :D

My m860tu died for no reason.

I have a fan I can sell if you're interested, doesn't rattle or anything.

I've had my Acer Ferrari for almost seven years now and never once cleaned the vents/fans. Still running NPs :p.
