    Hello all!

I've decided to make this new thread in the hope of clearing up the quite confusing situation around what seems to be a multitude of different LCD brands on the models based on Clevo M860TU. So far I have established that some models come with the following brands:

    AU Optronics (Taiwan) - AUO187B

    LG-Philips - LPL0000 (glare?)

    Chi Mei (China) - N154Z1-L02

    Samsung?

Now, since the resellers do not show which LCDs they put on their M860TU's, I think we should shed some light on it, so that people will know 1) what screen(s) can actually be considered as the "best" in terms of brightness and contrast and 2) where to get what, so that you don't find yourself in some lottery buying from a particular vendor, without really knowing what you'll get. Obviously there has got to be differences both in price and quality depending on the manufacturer of the LCDs, so the purpose of this thread is to organize this knowledge. As has been said in another thread, when buying such expensive toys you at least want to know what exactly you are getting.

Feel free to discuss the individual LCD screens and report (using a program such as Everest) what brand your screen is, its resolution, glare or non-glare and from which vendor you got your rig. Then hopefully we'll clear up which brands to go for and which to avoid.

    Thanks! :)

Mine is a 1680x1050 AUO1B7B model. I have owned 7 laptops and this the best screen I've seen yet out of all of them. I was blown away when I turned this laptop on for the first time to see such a beautiful screen with even backlit, no dead pixels and not shimmery or grainy like my Asus F8sv or my Dell XPS. It is gorgeous to see blu-ray movies play on it even though I don't watch movies on it that much. The only downside is that its not as bright as some of screens I've seen out there.

imo all three of those are great including the chi mei panel. thats the same panel they use in the msi and a lot of asus notebooks. out of the three id pick the lg myself first the chi mei second and the auo third (only because of brightness) but they are all pretty good panels

Here's a comparison of a German M860TU with the Glossy WSXGA LCD Display - N154Z1-L02 from Chi Mei. Although the method is probably not scientifically correct, the screen does seem to be significantly darker (dimmer) than the others.

I have the LP154WU1-TLB1 matt WUXGA screen. A quick googling of the name brings up LG-Phillips.

It appears as though it's been used in Thinkpad T61p laptops quite a bit.

If you only look at M860tu picture at first you think "wow, the M860tu got some good contrast" but after looking at rest of the pictures the M860tu does seem quite a bit darker. Do you think Clevo capped the brightness on purpose for better battery life? It seem to me that no matter what type lcd they have in them, the brightness seem to be all the same.

The brightness of the screen is something that I've been worried about, MrDJ let me pop down to his place to have a look and in my view the WSXGA+ glossy screen is pretty good. Its no Dell XPS M1330 screen for sure but its on a par with screens from Toshiba and Dell D620. I think playing with the gamma settings will enable alot of improvement from stock setup too. What I wonder is how bespoke these screens are? i.e. could we stick a screen from a Dell XPS 1530 into the machine - how hard would that be?

    Regards,
    Neil.

Chei Mei and AU O make the screens for the XPS laptops for Dell too.

for me the picture on M86 way darker then any on this pic. look in the shadow from the bid tower: on M86 there no details at all and on all others (especially on Asus and Medion) you definetely can see bottom part of small tower.that's what i'm talking about.

it's really bad for shooters, where there are lots of dark scenes.....

you can not judge anything by that pic. how was each display set? unless each was set to the exact same spec with a pro colorimter or similar and set to the same gamut and same temp rating those pictures mean moot... sure its a bit darker when you get it so turn up the contrast a bit and down the brightness a hair.. etc..

I got a AU Optronics B154PW01, its a WXGA+ matte. I personally think its the best matte screen I've seen and the only downside is the low res.

Exactly what I was thinking. I turned my display down a bit (two notches) as it was too bright (and don't most shooters have a brightness/gamma adjust?). I have a... QDS003E, 1680x1050 glossy, which is Quanta, I guess. Xotic ordered, Sager built, Received early Sept.

I'm not 100% satisfied with my LG-Philips screen. The color and viewing angles are above average, but the brightness just isn't enough for me. I'll call it dim. I don't see it in games, but it disappoints me while web browsing.

Sounds like I'd like the Quanta, but I'd hate to gamble and lose the color of this LG.

We have LPL1479 (LG Phillips) and AU AUO1B7B in our 860TU chassis, however it depends if it's new, a repair, if we source the screen seperately for matt rather than glossy etc.

Clevo ship the barebones with the screens installed so most resellers don't get to choose, unless some actually purchase screens seperately but I'm not aware of anyone who does.

That's interesting. My screen's angle is not that great, 10 degrees or less, I'd say vertically, better horizontally (30 degrees? not bad). I've gamed over the shoulder of someone (made him play FPSes that I wanted to know the plot of :p) sitting about a half foot to a foot of what I'd normally sit at (3.5 foot high table) and the colors were completely reversed. I don't have any thoughts on the color of the display, to be honest. I haven't seen anything washed out, and it's been similar to a 19inch CRT that a nearby desktop uses. The colors are better than my old Dell (with LG display, five years old, so that means nothing).

Re: Brightness, my screen maxed is the same as my LG Incite's screen, or an iPhone's screen. I.e. a bit too bright to read on comfortably, but I have turned up the brightness in some games.

Yeah, all the barebones I've seen sold (RJTech, etc) have had the screen attached, so it makes sense if it's Clevo shipping them (also odd that there are so many manufacturers).

    This is correct.

I used to be in the retail LCD tv business and I can assure you there is no comparison besides a professional test the next best thing for your comparison would be following the settings on this instructional http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

After calibrating all monitors using the above then run your picture again and that would be more of a reliable test sample.
