I was told that the Clevo MXM Video Cards will only work on Clevo laptops / notebooks. Is this correct ?? Or will they also work in other laptops / notebooks and if so which other ones will they *possibly* work in ?? Thanks for any info. God Bless :)

They will only work in Clevo systems; the same goes for any other company's MXM-based cards - they'll only fit in that company's systems.

very gray area..... some accurate info, some not.

The Clevo vendors that sell MXM cards are actually standard MXM-III and IV.

Firstly, any MXM-IV card is only compatible with Clevo notebooks.... simply because only Clevo notebooks have MXM Type IV slots. :)

Secondly, MXM Type III and Type II cards will actually work in Clevo notebooks since the MXM Type IV slot is backwards compatible.

    So for example:
    - you can actually use a Nvidia 9600M GT (MXM Type II) in a Clevo notebook.... some Clevo vendors will give you this option, most will not since they follow all of Clevo's support papers to the letter.

So if you get a MXM Type III from a Clevo vendor, you can use it in another notebook.... given that the notebook has specifications to handle the card.... BIOS recognition.

Clevo does NOT manufacturer the MXM cards.... Nvidia does, they just sell them [with heatsink/fan assemblies for their systems].

A friend of mine has a M860TU with 9600M inside. But the idea is then... can someone for example take a 9600M MXM card from an ASUS and put'it in a Clevo or vice-versa?

If Nvidia is making the cards, then they should be compatible.

ASUS' mainstream consumer notebooks uses their 'flipped' MXM connector and does not comply with the standard MXM format. Only their whitebooks (C and Z series), and the W90, seems to use the standard MXM format. Even so, compatibility remains to be murky at best. Someone installed a 9600M GT in an ASUS C90 and it will not run at 3D clocks, and had to have its VBIOS modified to do so.

I see, so there still is hope for the day when I can just buy an MXM hard from the IT shop down the road :).

Only if you build a laptop, like KTRON. :D
