Nice model in that price range, not very many have IPS screens on them.

Does anyone have this PC? How loud does the fan get compared to a Macbook Pro? How many hours of battery life can you get non-gaming?

I own this PC and the fan is very loud when i'm running games or doing some intensive on the PC. When in a quiet environment, it can become quite irritating, even when the fans are spinning at low speed, there is still quite a small amount of noise. The battery life i'm getting out of this PC while doing school work on this PC is about 2 to 2.5 hours on Power Saving mode.

Might be worth cleaning the fans if there is any dust build up, to see if they might run a little smoother and quieter. Also, depending on the temperatures you are getting, it might be worth applying thermal paste and getting a higher quality thermal paste. If you can lower the temps a little bit, then it might help prevent the fans from spinning up as much. Not sure what your temps might look like, or if it was always that way when you got the computer.

Howdy, hope no one minds if I hijack this thread a bit with a question...!

I own one of these and I'm wondering if the IPS panel is performing properly. With default settings (and a gamma of 2.2) I can only see clearly down to square 11 or so on this test: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php

Would someone with this machine mind having a look and seeing if they get a better result than me? Thanks!

Unless you see obvious artifacts then it's likely the panel itself is functioning normally. I assume if you move the window around the screen all areas are the same?

Hullo, thanks for the reply. Yes, I think the panel is otherwise performing correctly. If I look at a gamma test on this display, the gamma level appears consistent regardless of viewing angle (whereas on non-IPS panels it changes depending on viewing angle), and colours are rich and vibrant. I just noticed that I was having trouble viewing darker scenes in some games, and wasn't sure if that was normal!

I did some Googling and found that many people seem to find that black levels are a weak point of IPS displays, but it would be nice to compare with some other N550RC users!

Yes, it's certainly not a strong point of IPS, the lower black levels and slower response times are the traditional weaknesses.

Response times are certainly an inhibitor in gaming. In many other applications, it's not as bad as it's stigmatized to be.

IMO, the issue of IPS having a slower response time is way overblown. With modern gaming monitors, we're talking a difference of 1ms for TN vs 4ms for IPS, something that the overwhelming majority of people will not notice.

Most desk monitors are going to be faster than laptop screens though, and there is still a decent gap between TN and IPS there. But yes, most people might not notice any ghosting though.

Yes, you can't get away with some of the techniques used in desktop monitors as the power requirements would be too high.

I'm talking things like pixel over drive to increase response time, that's a hardware level thing.
