I am trying to build a linux system.
I would like to get the 17 inch thunderbolt P chassis models (it has the best cooling and design quality), but I don't want or need a GTX 780M or SLI 765 (probably won't won't install well on linux) or a 8970 (which'll give all sorts of problems with emulation on linux for programs).

I can't find a single config anywhere on the internet that allows my to go down from 780 to 770 (or better, a 765), bince I need a single card solution, with the best possible cooling. I'll be using it in a place without air conditioning. I'd much rather upgrade the screen and wireless and memory latency instead of most cost being for a video card I don't need and can't use.

And when I go to the next chassis, the ones that lack thunderbolt, I am prevented from downgrading from a 770M to a 765M, and again, the cost ends up almost identical to the high end thunderbolt chassis w/ 8970! Too bad I can;t make use of the 8970.

Is there any reason why the 765M, a solid enough card for 3D, cannot be used in these chasses? Maybe this can be done.

The reason you won't generally find any suppliers with the config you want is because they come the way you see them from Clevo, so even the barebones units are already as is. That's not to say downgrading the card will not work - but it is a stab in the dark if nobody has tested the card with the system.

Contact Mythlogic as they are a Clevo builder. They may be able to build it for you, if possible. And post the result to let us all know.

Your best bet may be finding someone who would like to swap plus cash or going with the 8970M.
