Clevo P150EM - Upgrading to GeForce GTX 1060?

I got a Clevo P150EM with Clevo Radeon R9 M290X in it, and I want to upgrade that to a MSI/Clevo GeForce GTX 1060 6GB as they are available on eBay now in a good amount and similar price as a 980M.

I realised that the 1070 and 1080 uses external power even if you can find them in standardised form factor (Yes it does exist) you still need to rewire the ext power and I am not sure if my 15 inch laptop has the appropriate cooling for such beasts therefore I am sticking to the 1060.

Is it possible? I heard someone say that the new 10xx series cards behave different from the 9xx series and therefore making upgrade hard? Should Clevo cards not virtually just work in every Clevo laptop?
I still cannot find the embedded Polaris MXM cards either available anywhere even on the embedded market, those are 100W and standardised form factor, same performance as a Rx 480

 

I have a P150EM as well, and the consensus I've seen is that the P150EM supports 10xx, but only with full UEFI. This means you need an eDP display and need to run off of the dedicated GPU only.

That is okay, I already run full UEFI with Windows 8.1.
But only with eDP display? It cannot work traditionally through the PCI port? You got anything to confirm this with?
It be nice if anyone who tried put a 1060 in a Clevo P150 would share their experience, a lot of money to put into this card if it does not work even if you can just resell it.

 

Yep, new 10xx is eDP only. Motherboard has no eDP connector, so you'll have to go woth an external 120hz display

That is okay, I found the Radeon Rx 480 MXM on taobao so I am going to have that instead since AMD is no screwing around with compatibility.

 

eDP not required here. Optimus in these models should take the output from the dGPU and route the output via LVDS port just fine.

You do need to make sure the MSI 1060 you get works in Clevos and doesn't do the beep/1 minute auto shutdown thing because it's not receiving a certain thermal probe signal

I think a few 1060s have gone into EMs fine

 

980m would be better than the Rx 480

No its not, its a full sized Rx 480 not the mobile version, 150W TDP.

It does not have LVDS support thankfully the Clevo P150 has eDP, now its only a matter if it will work... Also its 300 dollars, its way cheaper than a 980M unless you know them cheaper out there I might just be willing to get nVidia and not put an nVidia sticker on pretend it does not exist.

Damn thanks for finding that, I might look around more, I found Clevo GeForce GTX 1060 on eBay in standardn MXM 3.0b, not a big fan of nVidia shenigans though.

 

The guy earlier said that the GTX 1060 should work with Optimus, but Woodzstack has told me that it can only run off an eDP external display withoit Optimus. I really hope the first one is right, because I want to be able to take my laptop to school and still have a 1060.

If you disable optimus you loose any ability to use the machine except as a remote desktop (all outputs hooked into IGP).

 

Yea, and that's why I want to knoe if he had to do that. Did I skip over a photo of it running on gis integrated display?
