Just getting the dusts off from my P150HM which has been sitting around unused. However, the 6990M is acting up (dreaded artifacts) / when booted. Will have to get a replacement MXM gpu for it (reflowing seems a pretty temporary fix)
In terms of a replacement - have seen AMD M290 - quite costly (about £150) - would this work? Also would Nvidia 765M work? (About £135). Once I fix the graphics, I might resell the laptop as my ultrabook is okay for me. Which of the above Nvidia or AMD card attract a higher value? (290M has flagship class brand name - though the card is similar to the ancient 7970M - whereas I suspect the Nvidia is mid-range card, but is actually faster?)
P.S. Loads of the MXM 3B cards on eBay appears to be pulled form Dell. The choices are slightly limited if I'm looking for something that specifically says Clevo. Are the the Alienware MXM cards different from the Clevo cards? e.g. do you need to do some form of flashing to get AW to work on Clevo?
Thanks

Dell cards wont work in HM machines, stick to Clevo or MSI cards
Nvidia: 400M, 500M, 600M gpus work (driver .inf mods needed with 680M)
AMD: 6000M, 7000M gpus work (vbios flash needed with 7000M) -
Would this work?

MX card is funny. Can't remember if MX card belongs in the 6xxM generation? -
ah yes, that was a special naming scheme in the 600M series: regular M cards were mostly rebranded Fermi cards (680M being an exception), whereas MX versions were higher clocked cards or based off of newer gen chips. regular M cards definitely work, MX cards not sure...

Okay. Also nothing newer than Nvidia 6xxM series is supported I guess? (860M isn't a bad option though not sure if it's supported)
Thanks, -
I think for the 7970m you would need to flash the bios because the AMD enduro does the work for this model. I was something like that if I remember correctly, I could be wrong.
-
yep thats correct: 7970M needs a vbios flash to work properly and anything newer than AMD 7000M and Nvidia 600M series wont work in the HM. anything OLDER might work, but its hit and miss there...

Great. Just to check - so M290X definitely would require some messy vmodding?

nope M290X wont work. only 7970M would do, and even there ull need a Clevo card version 1.2 (v1.1 and v1.0 of that gpu wont work in HM machines)
-
Just as @jaybee83 stated: either get a 7970m V1.2 (vBios flashing required) or a Clevo GTX 680m (driver .inf-modding required). All other options are hit or miss and less performant.
With the 7970m you get slightly more performance out of the box, whereas with the 4GB from the 680m you have an advantage when playing actual games + the 680m is better overclockable.jaybee83 likes this. -
And plus the 7970m only has 2gb of memory, the 680m has 4gb.

And the heat-sink will work for both NV/AMD cards? (If so just need some thermal pads / paste)
UK currency is pretty terrible in exchange rate - so will keep an eye on either 680 / 7970M (I don't need another Clevo laptop to flash it, correct? And I imagine I could request the seller to flash it? assuming they have a ready laptop)
For some odd reason with 6xxM series anything under 680M (e.g. 675/670/660) all seems to be around the performance of a 650M (non MX card wise).
