So, this happens sometimes where I take my laptop to classes and either quickly shut down the laptop and close the lid or just close the lid. However, sometimes it doesn't shut off, and I notice it. I start feeling the heat build up inside my backpack and of course I am not happy that heat is building up inside there + the battery usage = general deterioration of the laptop.

I'm not sure if the power button is accidentally being pressed, but that would mean it's being pressed through the lid.

    Any help/explanation here?

Make sure you don't accidently click your mouse if it's still connected by wire after going in standby mode.

If that's not the case, check the event viewer for any errors occuring when you are about to enter standby mode. Also check if your drivers are up to date.

What do you have the "when i close my lid" to? If you have it set to do nothing that has paused any shut down process for me before so the computer actually stays on.

Oh, right. For all my settings it's power button = shut down, lid closed/sleep button = sleep. No hibernate for SSD.

Whenever this happens and I go to open the laptop lid, it's on windows login.

Would it be that programs pausing the shut down process + me closing the lid causes some it to sleep instead? When I enter the desktop again generally nothing's loaded, as if it had restarted, not saved work from sleep.

That doesnt sound like its making it sleep. As castdead mentioned do you have any USB devices hooked up especially a mouse. If your setting to wake from USB is on, turn it off.

No. I only have the laptop when I'm taking it to classes.
