Clevo P150em won't boot! Help!

Hi guys.

Having some issues with my 6 year old clevo p150em I(3840qm, and 7970m, 8gb Corsair memory, SSD 256 msata and 1tb Toshiba HDD)

Some time ago it started heating quite a lot, so I got arctic thermal paste and changed it on the CPU/gpu.

Thing is that, before that it already stopped working from time to time, would get a white screen, the laptop would froze and I would have to manually reset it. Then it won't boot, it will only switch on the keyboard lighting, I will hear the dvd unit loading, but nothing on the HDD light. The only light working is the BT one, that stays on, but after half a minute it will shut down by itself and no go for a while. Sometimes I leave it for a few days and then it starts back on, but after like an hour, again white screen froze and shut down, and back to start.

Already tried changing ram modules, trying one then the other, removing the CMOS battery, the laptop battery and pushing the on button for like 45 seconds yo reset everything, but no luck. I even removed the gpu and tried to start the laptop again, but nothing...

I don't know what to do, before taking it to a shop, just in case someone has any idea on what to do or what the issue might be... I'm going to leave it for a few days n see if it starts again.

This is an odd issue. It's rarely a problem but have you tried reseating the CPU?

 

Did it when replacing thermal paste. I know it's weird, I just can't find an explanation! Saw in another post that had almost the same problem that was about the gpu, but I disconnected mine but still no luck... So I guess I'll have to take it to service and see what they say... I just don't wanna throw away a 2k€ laptop!

 

What's odd is it sounds like a GPU issue, but the P150EM has the iGPU as the main GPU and those are very resilient. The PCH does get very hot on these systems and the PCH does have the iGPU display drivers. Maybe the solder for that is getting flakey.

Other than replacing the motherboard maybe you can try another CPU and see what that does. The EM series also can run older 2000 series cpus for testing purposes.

 

Thank you guys for the tips! Actually I found the hottest part lately being just where the 2.5hdd is located, but let's see if it starts again. I'll see if I can find another older/cheaper CPU to do more testing, or checking a new MB... Maybe I'll just take it to a service and see what they detect and start from there.

HDDs do generate a fair bit of heat.

 

I believe thats actually where the PCH is located on the P1x00XM series.

Honestly given the cost of service and repair, I would look into purchasing a new model. Unless of course you have lifetime warranty for service/labour

 

Try to flash the BIOS.
