The boxes appear to be in a fixed position at all times and the laptop appears to function normally otherwise. Does this sound like a problem with the display or graphics card?

I'd go with screen. When you say all the times, you also mean while booting, right? and even when using the iGPU? Try hooking up to an external monitor or tv set, and you'll pretty much have your answer ^^.

Sounds like the monitor to me too. How big are these boxes, 1 or 2 pixels wide or 10-15. Jaycob ideas will be perfect to let you know if its the screen or GPU.

Exactly. This doesn't sound GPU related, but for assurance sake, if you can connect the laptop to an external display, that will be your best way to troubleshoot.

Ok, its actually from a local computer shop. They took the machine in on trade trade and parted it out. They didn't test with an external display before parting it out and assumed it was the lcd panel but are selling me the video card for cheap as is since they aren't sure where the problem was. They just said it would boot with red squares in fixed positions and load windows fine. Id like to flash the vbios replace the 6990m in my p170hm if it was a good card. I guess its just a gamble.
