Hi Guys,
I have a cool old notebook - Clevo P170HM with a GTX 680M and currently having some driver installation problems under Windows 10 Pro. My system works flawless under Windows 7, but was thinking about upgrading to Win 10 last weekend...
After installed Win 10 i did the same *.inf file update as i go wiht Win 7 drivers.
Then the installer detects my card, but quits while it starts actually copying the files ("Nvidia Installer Failed").
I tried a few different drivers, but they were all the same...
My Win 10 was a clean install and have tried quit some background tasks / driver clean tools...
Is there a trick to install a working driver under Win 10?
Thanks!

@djkutasi - Which BIOS are you running?
-
Well... i updated my BIOS and vBIOS 2 years ago (when i bought my GTX680M). I am not sure about the version number, have to double check when get home.
Do you think it will work with a newer BIOS? -
So, here you the details:
BIOS version:
1.01.10
KBC/EC:
1.00.09
VBIOS:
80.04.29.00.01
My BIOS shows that the VGA card slot is empty... :S but Windows 7 detects my card after i modify the inf files. -
Easy fix, you have to disable driver signature enforcement.
Just run "cmd" as administrator, then write
bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
hit enter, then write this
bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING
enter
Then reboot the machine and install the driver. Halfway through the install it will ask you to install the driver even though it is modified, just click "install anyway". -
Is is that simple?
How can i start CMD as admin?
Thanks anyway! -
Open the windows start menu (press the windows button on your keyboard), then just type "cmd" or "command". In the menu you will see "Command prompt", rightclick it and select "run as administrator".
BTW, there are other ways too to disable driver signature enforcement: http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how...8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/
However, I consider my way the easiest.
And yes, it is indeed that simple. Windows 7 does not have driver signature enforcement, it started with Windows 8 and is also being used in Windows 10. -
Great, thank you again, i try this later.
Do you have a GTX680M as well?
I was thinking of upgrading my system and get a newer notebook with GTX970M... Sadly I maxed out my Clevo...
Do you think is that a worth it?
Generally i like my gear, but it just getting old. -
You can see my X7200's configuration in the bar below the message. Honestly, now is not the time to get a 970M, with Pascal being just around the corner. I will surely wait for the next series of Notebooks featuring 1080Ms or equivalent GPUs. The 680M is still quite potent, and unless it dies on me, the card will allows to play games at medium-high settings until I upgrade, which is enough for me
-
Wait until Pascal mobile is out. Then the Maxwell Generation should be cheap enough or you just jump on the Pascal-Train! -
-
Thanks guys!
I got my Clevo P170HM for a very good price, but since then i replaced almost everything. That's the cool about this machine, it's almost like a desktop pc.
Now i have a Core i7 2860QM (2.5GHz), 16 GB Ram, 250 GB SSD, 2TB HDD and a blu-ray writer as well (including my GTX680M 4GB). I might able to get a faster cpu, but not sure if that's supported or not...
Do you think is there a faster CPU for my gear?
I am completely lost with the hundreds versions of i7s...
Anyway i take you advice and hold off with complete upgrading. -

The only faster one is the extreme edition (which is unlocked)
2920xm and 2960xm (same chip basically). -
Alright i managed to disable driver signature and now my Win 10 is working fine.
Though i have to do the way (see below), since the cmd command option didn't work for some kind of reason:
How can I install drivers that are not digitally signed?
Windows 10 enforces driver signatures by default. This can be disabled to install drivers that are not digitally signed. Use the following steps to disable driver signature enforcement.
- Click the Start
menu and select Settings.
- Click Update and Security.
- Click on Recovery.
- Click Restart now under Advanced Startup.
- Click Troubleshoot.
- Click Advanced options.
- Click Startup Settings.
- Click on Restart.
- On the Startup Settings screen press 7 or F7 to disable driver signature enforcement.
- Click the Start

Did you resolve Installation?

Yes, i did, everything works fine now. Thought Windows 7 runs much faster, so i put it back
.

For instance, Stream(?) gaming works very slow for some kind of reason. It takes almost 3-4x times as long to load.
I play Doom and startup of this game was ridiculously slow ...and even during the gameplay. If you die the reboot screen stops at 99% and i have to wait approx. 30 sec after that. Also the game loads textures much slower... and think frame rate was worst comparing to Win 7.
Other problems with Win 10 for example
...if i copy files from my SSD to HDD that goes much slower or freeze at the end...
...I couldn't set my network hard drive in Total Commander and have to dig and edit system files to make it work.
...my mouse had also a funny (inaccurate) movement
...and it's hard to grab and resize windows in this new operating system.
But my biggest concern was the slow performance with games. I don't have any of the mentioned issues with Win 7. Maybe i could fix most of the issues with driver updates or more system file edits, but i don't have time for this... :S -
I have the complete opposite experience with Windows 10. Almost everything works flawlessly, while there are just some minor annoyances like the fan starting its highest RPM at 81°C instead of 78°C. Possibly you could try the new Redstone build once it is released. Your problems might be associated to missing W10 drivers for your hardware, like my fan profile thing.
Games like Witcher 3 benefited from W10, while others like BC2 (older games) suffered. -
You could be right... apart from my video and soundcard driver i didn't install anything. Maybe i will give a try, was just strange the system was much slower at the default install.
I also noticed that temperature thing (less fan noise), but since the system was slower didn't see it as an advantage -
Haha man, you need to install the Chipset driver as well... audio/video comes after that actually. Not surprised it didn't run well for you
-

Generally the chipset driver is the first, the rest don't matter so much in order.
-
Okay guys i will give an another try to this Windows 10
Any ideas where can i get the Win 10 chipset drivers from?
Thanks again! -
-
Yes, i did the same and my Win 10 works fine now and seems little bit faster than Win 7.
Thanks guys for all of your help!
