I have a half dead 6990M. It can boot to safe mode and use the standard windows VGA drivers. The minute the catalyst driver loads the screen goes black. I don't need the latest and greatest so I figured the 485M would do. This system is running a fresh install of windows 8.1 and I currently have the AMD driver set to hidden for windows update, so I have full access without the driver loaded.

I believe everything else is running just fine when the AMD or MS driver is loaded. I can access the system over the network with RDP. I have searched google far and wide and found that the 6990M is prone to this type of failure.

I found some OEM non packaged GTX 485M for 200 bucks and was wondering if there is anything special I need to look for or do to get it running.

Can I use the same heat sink from the 6990M?
Do I have to flash the BIOS to anything specific?
Is there a specific version number of the 485M that I need to ask about?
I know, I will need some new paste... but do I have to replace any of the strips on the heatsink or anything?
