    Hey guys,

This is really making me nervous. I have a P170HM with the Radeon 6990. I splurged for the diamond thermal paste upgrade from Malibal. But for some reason, my GPU temps are going through the roof right now! Do I need to shut the game down immediately? Am I going to damage my machine at this temperature? What could be the problem?

Note - temps are high (upper 90s) even at low resolutions and 100+ fps.

It might be the paste has degraded or the heatsink is stuffed with dust, open the backplate and see. If there's no dust, then a repaste is needed.

There should be 4-5 screws right under the backplate.

unscrew the base plate on the bottom is what he means. remove mains and battery and remove the screw with a philips screwdriver.
check your user manual for which screws to undo

Thanks guys, apparently I had half a cat there... Temps still in 80s, should I worry about repaste? I've only had this baby since Jan/Feb...

Have you tried to rub some bacon on it??? :D
If it's 80 degrees on load then everything is OK.
Of course if you want to loose a couple of degrees then you should consider repasting. PK-3

I repasted this morning. It sucks when you are getting 5-6'C more on idle compared to last year when I first got the laptop.
I opened up the heatsink and found the paste was caked (there was too much paste everywhere, needed to clean everything around the GPU core, removed the black sticker and threw it in the trash bin).
Then I put on a small drop of paste, removed half of it and then I put the heatsink back on.

Im gonna monitor my temps today to see if I managed to lower them a bit. Im a complete noob about repasting, this was my first try. I hope the temps go down a bit.

Did clean your vents? Go to Home Depost and buy a heavy duty air compressor. It shall be helpful!

Heavy duty air compressor? I think a can of compressed air will suffice.

Of course cleaning vents with air is good, but buying a heavy duty air compressor for it? Going to the extreme! :D
