    Hi,

Will the keyboard from a Clevo P70HM fit/work on a P170EM? Has anyone tried?

Don't mind the backlight, I can live without it.

    Cheers
    Jorge

    Hi @Meaker@Sager

Damn, I had the hope they would at least be compatible and the EC would be able to read it. I just hate the P170EM keyboard and might be able to get my hands on the keyboard from a P170HM for cheap... And it's impossible to get the MSI steel series one around here....

    thanks! :)

The HM ones were not backlit were they? I think that's why they changed.

indeed, I was hoping that the lack of backlight was the only difference...

You have the extra cable and then thickness too.

You mean the extra cable for backlight? and which one is thicker? is it noticeable?

As far as I know the motherboards are interchangeable between HM, EM, and SM chassis. You just won't have a spot to plug the keyboard backlight into when putting an HM in an EM.

eDP and LVDS connector locations may be reversed. The difference is minor though and your LVDS cable should still reach. I think HM LVDS requires a shorter cable. This is something you should check.

There are only substantial differences if you're putting a 150 board in a 170 frame or 157 frame.

The CPU and GPU in your signature will not work in an HM board.

    UPDATE:

Sorry, I misread this as wanting to switch the motherboards, not the keyboards.

The HM keyboard is much thinner than the EM keyboard. It may not be secured properly without modification.

The EM keyboard is thicker to allow the LEDs and light pipes to fit.

Good info to know, I thought that the GPU would work, e.g. like a 980M should work on the P170EM

so... that means that in theory, if I can somehow remove the LEDs and light pipes from the P170EM keyboard and attach them to the P170HM keyboard, I might be able to add backlight to it? got a couple of bad spare EM keyboards I can try to eviscerate just for fun...

    Thanks guys! :)

The caps wont be transparent and they are almost laminated in construction.

True. Maybe I can reuse the caps from a Greencell MSI GT70 keyboard that I bought thinking it would work on my clevo? probably won't fit, but can give it a try...

    Yes 980m will work.

The EM keyboards have the LEDs glued on. You can only remove the stupidly heavy steel backplate, and that requires very carefully peeling off the glued on keyboard cable. If you don't care for preserving the keyboard though it may be possible.

I thought the p570wm was the one with the steel back plate? I think the normal em keyboards did not come with that.

IIRC all P---EM models used the same keyboard with the steel plate (excluding the non-RGB 151EM).

I might never have removed my EM one I suppose, I thought it was an extra on the P570wm since it was not really concerned with weight, I guess the more you know :)

not so worries about preserving the keyboard, got a coupl eof spare ones to give it a try... ;)

and I guess that a hot air blower to melt the glue is out of the question... :p

I'll try to take fotos in case it works :)
