I have 3 profiles:
Low: 100 MHz Core, 150 Mhz Memeory, 0.71V
Medium : 300 Mhz Core, 900 Mhz Memory, 0.85V
High: 680 Mhz Core, 900 Mhz Memory, 0.91V
I'm 95% of the time on low, even when watching 1080p videos on youtube, with 2 screens, etc.
I only every switch to a higher clocked profile when playing games.
Temp wise, i idle at 42C on low, with the NC2000 cooler. on High (without any activity) i idle around 65 with the NC2000 turned off.
68C idle seems like your GPU is indeed running at maxed clocks (680 / 900), which was also the case for me when connecting a second monitor.
Try forcing the clocks at 100 / 150 with the default voltage at 0.9V (you could try to under volt later if you want. It can really go down quite a a bit).

Did a OC attempt today, tried running 820 MHz on the GPU core and 1050 MHz on the memory.
It stays at 90c and did peak up to 100c when using "Fn+1".
A little too high tempwise for me, so im gonna clean my notebook for dust and reapply with IC Diamond thermal paste since i finally found a retailer. -
-
CPUID Hardware Monitor did only show 1 temp bar for the GPU.
Dident get any artifacts or graphical errors on my OC so it was stable, did a 1h play on Splinter Cell Conviction. -
That's the tool i had before, but now i manly use HWiNFO64, try that! It records all the available sensor temps on your rig) Hope it helps..
-
Checked with HWiNFO64 and my GPU does peak at 100c with 775MHz core 1000MHz memory overclock.
Highest GPU usage was 94%.
But usually it stayed at the 80c mark.
Highest CPU temp was 74c and it did stress all 4 cores.
I checked the temps while playing Splinter Cell Conviction.
The card does handle desktop HD 6850 clocks and does not show any graphical errors, but im replacing the thermal paste with some IC Diamond later this week. -
You'd better do it, cause i seriously doubt you GPU will last a year with such a high temps! It's probably a bad thermal paste job or the heatsink doesn't touch the surface of the chip correctly...

The AMD Radeon 6970M is now being phased out. No further comment at this time. Sorry...

Let's hold some horses for now, New GPU's incoming!!! That's sweet, why this summer is so hot )
-
-
I meant 2012 for the 7000M series. The existence of another 6900M series part has been known since late February.
-
Exactly, in '12 will see some 28nm GPU's 7000-series from amd and 600-series (or whatever) from nvidia, but in between future and present during summer two brands are expected to release their new flagships on top of 485m and 6970m to bring out some more competition for the next half a year. So we wait)

Interesting stuff. Going to be making a trip to the US in August and I'm planning on buying an 8150 and having it shipped to my hotel. I was going to go for the 6970 but with the phase out I hope I won't get caught with my pants down and forced to choose either the 560 or the 485. Much rather have a cheaper ATI and suffer the 10% perfomance drop than pay an extra $200.

-
I know that previous ATI GPU's suffered GSOD's and random driver (atikmdag) resets. Never encountered those on my 6970m. -
-
I wont replace my gpu unless i see some awesome 28nm cards.
But right now im busy using my 3DS thanks to OoT 3D. ^_^ -
6970M phased out !?
Not in my knowledge, neither in the knowledge of Clevo. They still sell it for $470 without any problem. -
Since I built a barebone P170HM with a 6970m for a friend of mine and he will take it over in a few days, I thought I post some Benches as long as I can since I am testing it all anyway

When never moving the notebook check the intake vents at the bottom after a month of frequent use. This thing sucks in dust like a motherf*****. I noticed it was all gray underneath (especially at the GPU fan), despite my efforts to keep dust away from my notebook.

Hi, I ve just got my laptop today and it came with the standard clevo drive. However when i try to update it to 11.9 it says that it does not recognise my card... what should i do. I tried uninstalling it but it would not work so I used system restore to get the original driver back. Is my card faulty or is there a special way to install the driver?? thanks

i just downloaded the latest one from ati site but when i launched it it sayed that it could not detect graphics card/ not compatible...
but the first one you suggested seemed to work so thanks a lot!! -

I have a question about fn +1 fan speed, when i toggle this on its goes at full speed than slows down and then speed up again. is this a problem any way to fix this?

That "pulsing" is a known issue on older Bios versions. You can try doing a bios upgrade to see if it helps. If you have a Clevo machine, the Clevo bios thread has everything you need:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/416916-clevo-bios-thread.html
However, if you have a Sager branded machine DO NOT use the above unless you plan to stick with those Bios from there on- switching back may brick your machine.
The new bios will not get rid of that issue completely, but it does make a big difference. -
I'm not sure if I can use the clevo bios or not, I.e I have the clevo shell but it is a bto from Japan. How do I check if it uses the clevo bios but before updating the graphics driver to 11.9 it had the clevo driver in it....

Awesome give that a try tomorrow. Its 2am so probably no point contacting them right now
