Hello everyone as the title says i need some help with installing a GTX 980M into my P170SM ( BIOS is up to date on the laptop )

The laptop can get into windows but there is long beeps before the laptop shuts down and restarts ( around 90 seconds till shut down )

i have uploaded pictures of the card and of the lights displayed that link to the laptops long beeps.

I think this is a MSI 4GB version ? like the one in this link " http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-GTX980-...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 "

i do own a P370EM to but that is my 970M SLI laptop ( i could use it to test )

    Thank you Damin

I believe for the 980M to work in P170SM you need Prema mod v2, Prema vBIOS and a modded .inf when installing drivers.

In answer to your question, yes that appears to be a 4GB MSI card.

The laptop has Prema mod v2 but i dont think Prema made a vBIOS for the 4GB version .

i think the card still has the MSI VBIOS on it and that is casing the beeping ? BIOS version 84.04.22.00.0C

You're right, it appears there is no mod for the 4GB 980M.

Without knowing you actually made me so happy. The issue is that the notebook doesn't recognize the card so it can't read the temperatures and starts beeping (also puts the card as N/A). It blinks and beeps loudly and then after a minute it turns off.

I thought i got a broken GTX 980M but thanks to you I finally know that the card very likely works. I thought that when a Clevo notebook is acting like it did that the card must be broken, but apparently not having the right VBIOS makes it act as if it has no card in it.

In your case your only option is to sell the card. The 4GB Version has ONLY MSI vbios, so it won't work in your clevo. You can sell it on ebay and buy yourself a GTX 980m 8GB.

Yes unless someone much wiser can add to this thread i think this is exactly what I am dealing with... the P170sm now has a GTX675M in it and it is working fine . That must be bad luck with the MSI 4GB version.. EBay must be the next move unless someone knows of a VBIOS flash to save it. All the 4GB VBIOS are on board GPU's and this 1 MSI

As I said, and all other will tell you, the 4GB version is MSI only, it's impossible to flash Clevo Vbios on it.

Did you get your 4GB 980m from ebay recently? Just curious because gtx1060 6gb is gaining traction with roughly the same performance while consuming less power. I have one working in my P170EM fyi.
