    Hello beautiful people!

In 2013 I bought my first ever clevo Sager NP9380-S (CP370SM3), and boy it was a beastly machine! Now Im not sure wether I should go for a new clevo or upgrade the components. If I could get your guys expertise and suggestion I would appreciate it! So this how my setup is:

    17.3" 120Hz 3D
    4930MX Mobile extreme edition
    16GB DDR3 Ram @ 1600Mhz
    GTX780M 4GB SLI GDDR5

Even by today's technology, that's a fine system. What will you use the computer for 80% of the time?

Sorry for the delayed reply and thank you for your inputs, much appreciated.. means alot!

I would say my level of expertise is pretty solid, what can I do to make this beast alive again? I might get someone else to do it if its too complicated. So lets hear it. :)

For gaming I would say. With current build I can't max out today's games. High settings pretty much. What's your thoughts?

Will I really be able to run the latest gpu 1080 on this? that would be awesome! :)

If you're going for max settings on current and future titles, that's a tall order. The right mods might help you get some better video cards in there. Your CPU should handle most anything current just fine; I don't see a bottleneck there, at least.

People have been experimenting with 1060s and that ilk. A 980M would certainly be doable.

Yeah CPU is still really good as you said, no need to upgrade it. But just out of curiosity is the 4960X the highest CPU I could run? Not a significant difference there.

980M seems to be the right choice as of now. But the question is run 980M SLI or a 1060? Not sure about that.

4940MX is mobile CPU, build on Haswell microarchitecture, works on FCPGA946 socket.
4960X is high-end desktop CPU, build on Ivy Bridge-E microarchitecture, works on FCLGA2011 socket.
Names is only one thing, what is similar for this two CPU-s.

A 1060 would be my choice if I was embarking on a project but even a single 980M would do better than the two cards you have now.

Hi there man!! i can say that i had the same problem as u have!!!
I've changed my crossfire radeon to an 980m everything is working fine the only problem for me was the brightness, cause my bios did not support it, but that can be fixed with autohotkey and a good script.

I'm thinking about going for the NVIDIA-GTX-1070-N17E-G2 but i have a problem... The card consumes 150W and i don't know if we can use it with only one power brick..

Did u see bennyg thread about this??

4960X is a desktop CPU that runs on the FCLGA2011 socket. Your system uses an FCPGA946 socket for mobile CPUs; you won't be able to install a 4960x.

There's the 4940MX, but it's not a big enough performance difference to justify the cost of upgrading.

If by "one power brick" you mean a single AC adapter then this should not be the problem, as two GTX 780m's should in theory consume more energy than a single 1070....

The powerlimit of the mainboard for a single card (or single mxm slot) will (in my eyes) determine if such an upgrade is possible.

I might totally be wrong so take that more as a personal opinion than as a fact.

A single 1060 (120W I think) should be easier for the motherboard.

Two 980m's are certainly better than the 780m's but still can't match a 1060, especially when SLI is not supported by a game...

A single 330W brick should handle a single 1070 no issue.

    hey there man!
I did not really see it, thanks for posting this will look into it. Its quite tempting even with a single 1070. I believe as Meaker pointed it out a single 330w should handle the card.

But I wonder how our laptop will handle the 1060 or the 1070 temps, or will the fans run at highest speed all the time :/

Eurocom is now selling gtx 1070 for the p370sm3! I guess that's what I'm going for :D
Can I run this in SLI in the future?
Do I need to make any modification? or is it only the heatsink? Need details on this.

Oh nice find! I would like an answer for this as well, thanks!

Well with this card i don't think so if you look in the images the sli bridge doesn't exist.

How much would my laptop go for roughly if I sold it (Europe price)?
Not sure if I should wether keep it and upgrade the GPU or sell it and get a new Clevo with 1080. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I'd definately keep it and upgrade the GPU, the new intel CPUs are hardly faster and all in all not noticeably better (if you already have an SSD and 16GB RAM).

Yeah that was my initial thought, but then got me to think, a new 1070 card will cost 1k (bear in my mind I live in Europe) and if I get about 2k (just estimating) for my laptop, that would leave me 3k to spend on a new clevo. Trying to weigh in whats good here.

So far we have GTX 1060 and gtx 1070 working in the following models:
    P150EM
    P170EM
    P15xSM
    P15xSM-A
    P17xSM
    P17xSM-S
    ‎P37xSM3 (eDP panel)
    P370EM3 (eDP panel)
    P570WM (eDP panel)
    P870DM
All of these models require our standard MXM3 GPU 82x105mm and require heatsink modifications before cards can be used.

P7xxZM and P7xxDM models are not supported at this time as we are unable to modify current heatsinks‎ to accomodate 10 series cards.

I'm not an expert but I doubt that you can get 2k...1,5 maybe...

Why do you even need to upgrade if you got two 980m's in your NB? Should actually be up to pretty much any game out there? ;)

I have two 780m's ;) I think you've mixed me up with andrew who got the 980m.

Edit: 1,5? hmm need someone "expert" to give me better value :p I cant post on price check because of 100 post. still 2,5k for a new clevo? so hard to tell :(

Well, judging by how much people ask for a NB like yours in Austria, I highly doubt you'd even get 1,5k with 780s....I REALLY don't want to upset you or tell you that your NB isn't worth that much but it's just that people don't pay much for used stuff.

For example on an austrian website called "willhaben", someone sells a P370SM with crossfired m290x's for 625€ and can't seem to find a buyer for it. It seems ridiculous considering what this NB is actually worth, but people prefer a new mainstream NB over a high end used one for the same price.

I bought my girlfriends P151EM with a 7970m, i7 3740QM (OC @ 4x3,9GHz), 16GB RAM, FHD screen and in PERFECT technical/optical condition for under 350€....a NB of that kind would cost about three times as much new....

PS: the 7970m is essentially the same card as a 8970m or m290x, just with less vRAM and 50MHz less core clock and you can easily clock it WAY higher, but people would pay way more for a m290x just because it's newer...it's the same everytime and everywhere, new(er) is considered more important than better by many people.

People prefer a smaller system, when you can get the same GPU power in a smaller system due to modern chips its not surprising. That and having a warranty.
