Hi, i am unable to output my P650SE laptop with gtx 970m to an external Samsung 1080p 120hz monitor.
Using one of the mini displayport on the laptop the max hz i am allowed to select is 100hz.
Btw i am using a cable that is a mini displayport one end (laptop) and regular displayport the other end (120hz monitor).

Apologies if i posted this thread in the wrong section.

It's probably the cable. DisplayPort seems to be more finicky about those than HDMI or DVI. I had problems with flickering on my P670RS when using an adapter and the cable that came with my 144Hz Dell S2716. I purchased this cable and have not had any issues since.

i had tested with my P651SG and an 144Hz 1080p AOC display some months ago and the HD4600 (optimus with GTX980m) was running 1080p with 144Hz just fine.... You should not buy any G-Sync / AMD Sync Version of the display ! The AOC was without this and it worked.

Cable's the issue.. The P650SE should easily do 1080p @144Hz... 1440p @144Hz is the magic question though!

Could someone let me know which Displayport version the P650SE is using? 1.2 or 1.3?

    It's DP1.2.

The problem is the P650SE had ALL display outputs connected to the Intel iGPU so you're limited to whatever the Intel GPU can output. It may just be a function of drivers.

This was later revised in the P650R/670R series where the external connectors are connected to the Nvidia GPU instead which makes things a LOT easier as well as supporting G-Sync externally.

That's true, but if you have the system in MSHybrid (aka Optimus) mode, even running with just an external monitor, you can't use Shadowplay to record your desktop. By all rights, this should be possible because with the internal display off, the Intel control panel doesn't show up in the system tray or when you right-click on the desktop.

If you run in MSHybrid mode the Intel GPU is still active and available, even without any monitors physically conected. Everything is still rendering to the Shared frame-buffer and transferred.

Using Discrete mode actually disables the iGPU via the BIOS, thus there's only the Nvidia framebuffer (which Shadowplay is reliant on).

    I doubt it's the cable.

I'm more inclined to think it's a driver issue. Have you tried grabbing new Intel drivers directly from Intel? Apparently they actually fixed the custom resolution function as well which should also help significantly.
