Just today I had an issue where the keyboard had significant lag for registering each keystroke. As in unless you waited a full second between keystrokes they simply did not register.
Slow typing, filter keys, and sticky keys are all off
I'm typing this from a cheap wireless keyboard and the issue is not present here. So should I order a replacement built-in keyboard? Or does anyone think this is a software issue?

It's a stab in the dark, but you can uninstall the keyboard driver, then allow Windows to reinstall its generic one (from within Device Manager). If you don't experience the lag anywhere else, e.g. in the BIOS setup, then it's not a faulty keyboard.

Thank you for the reply! I went into the BIOS and experience the same issue. I guess that means it is the keyboard or keyboard related hardware then.
I've found one on ebay that can arrive next Wednesday. I sure hope it was localized to the keyboard module and isn't deeper in the system...
The real bummer is that I'm pretty gentle on the laptop on the whole. No recent spills or drops or anything. Just bizarre.... -

You're welcome! It would be an odd kind of failure. You might try disconnecting the keyboard's data cable (the large black one) and reseating it - perform an NVRAM reset while you're at it (disconnect all power for a few minutes). If still no good, a replacement keyboard would be the next step.

Yep, reseating the data cable was the first thing I did (I actually re-seated both cables), and did disconnect the battery for a few minutes because someone on another forum suggested it. I think those things must have worked for some people, just not for me apparently.
Replaced display cable, GPU fans, LED indicator strip, and now keyboard on a 4-year old laptop. While I'm thankful everything is serviceable, I can't help but wonder if this is below-normal reliability. Especially considering my laptop just sits on my desk most of the time.
Maybe this was still a better investment than much-more-expensive 980M laptops back in 2015. Hopefully I can just fix everything. -

Sounds like a luck of the draw in your case, sadly. Some people don't abuse/neglect their systems and run into one thing after another, others just about trash theirs and have few to no issues ever. Thankfully the keyboard isn't terribly difficult to replace, and hopefully you don't continue to have a string of issues after this.

So replacing the keyboard didn't fix it. If this is a hardware issue, I'm guessing it's not repairable... Time to buy a new computer I guess
Thanks for the help so far. I really appreciate it. -

Really? That's odd! Any chance you'd be willing to have the seller take a look at it? Worst case would be an issue at the board. Kind of pricey in that scenario, but cheaper than a new system.
Happy to try to help out. Sorry to hear about the luck you've had with it.
