    Hi

Just wondered what you think of this..

    Specifically..

Storage - is it better to have a single HDD and then MSATA or a HDD and SSD?

Screen.. is the IPS standard ok.. I'm mainly going to be 1080 gaming so 4k isn't overly important.

    Wireless.. is the 7265 ok?

    Thanks

The best is to go with an M2 PCIE NVME SSD and a large HDD for storage since you wanna make use of your 2 M2 slots.

I configured my Clevo P870DM-G with two M2 950 PRO SSDs in RAID 0 (that's where I'll install the OS + Games) then I added two 2TB HDDs again in RAID 0 so I can have the total of 4TB for storing my huge videos library.

I wouldn't get the 7265 but instead, get the 8265 if you can.

Stay away from the Killer WLAN cards as they have a lot of issues with their drivers.

As for the screen it's fine and I don't think there are any choices here, they are all IPS Matte / G-SYNC Capable screens unless you choose the 4K screens which don't have G-SYNC and 4K resolutions on a laptop are a joke, you need a 200% DPI scaling at least to make any text readable and we all know how flaky DPI scaling on Windows is. Some programs play nice with it, others don't.

Also, try to get the Windows 10 Pro so you can have access to Group Policy Editor which gives you a lot of options to disable stuff easily like configure Windows Update to not restart automatically once it has installed updates, easily disable Windows Defender for good, easily be able to disable Home Group, easily be able to not show the "new application installed" annoying popup message when you install a program that has other files that can handle that extension, and many other options.

The M.2 PCI-E slots are the fastest storage options available at the moment. So I agree, that with mass storage in the other slots makes sense.

Get the 6700K, 1 M2 SSD, don't know if PC Specialist do the SM951, a 256GB version and a 1TB 7200rpm HDD for mass storage...

Looks like a good build. I agree with the m.2, it will give you more options for storage in the future, even with the standard m.2 vs the PCIe version.

I've heard that the fastest M.2 SSD's run very hot and throttle.

With a thermal pad on them, you'll be fine... Otherwise get your own 2.5" SSD... Get the Sandisk Extreme pro..

Depends on the usage, though the 950 pro is tailored to be less thermally limited.

mSATA = SSD. mSATA is just a different form factor. If you're bent on getting the fastest storage possible, go with one of the m.2 PCIe/NVMe drives. The mechanical HDD can be your go-to for mass storage (typically data such as documents, pictures, and videos).

And yes, the 7265AC is a pretty good card!

HIDevolution told me that all Clevo P870DM laptops come with 2 thermal pads for the M.2 SSDs as Clevo are aware of this heating issue so you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the advice..I'll have a tweak with the config. I was looking at scan but they only offer a 970 graphics card with chassis..seems pointless not having a 980 so pc specialist look to be the best offer in the UK.

Lots of good advice on this thread for you so far! Just bear in mind that we pulled the 8GB Hyper-X SODIMM modules as we encountered some issues (not the memory's fault), we don't know if other Clevo integrators know about it or have encountered the problem yet.

If you're happy with a 1 year warranty then I think PCS will always beat us on price, but if you prefer a longer warranty then drop us a line as we can always move on price :)

Just bought a n Octane II 17.3" from PCS myself. Great price compared to Scan and others.
I bought mine with No OS and cheapest H/D poss because I already had a 256GB NVME SM951 (from Scan :) ), a spare 500Gb 850 EVO and a spare copy of Win 8.1.
But anyway, so far, so good. A few minor Win 8.1 driver issues and the fact that they didn't include the screws and bits for the spare drives (which is being sorted), but otherwise a good experience after being messed around a bit by Scan.
Def go with M2 PCIe if poss. The 950 Pro is looking v.expensive at the moment, compared to SM951.

I've refined my specs ready to pull the trigger this week :)

Sadly PC specialist don't list the 7265 wifi card as an option currently which I would prefer.

Please let me know what you think..

just a heads up on the warranty which has previously been mentioned.
even though you upgraded to the silver warranty its still only 1 year on courier and parts and replacement parts in laptops can be very expensive.

Thanks.. I did consider upgrading the warranty but it would take me over my budget. Previous laptops I've had have failed in the first few months or not at all.

I did find the RAM was unavailable now. It's been replaced with 16GB HyperX IMPACT 2400MHz SODIMM DDR4 (2 x 8GB) ..which is a little more expensive but I guess is an improvement.,..especially considering the feedback form XMG..
