    Clevo P751DM2-G GPU Unit stopped working

    Hi guys!

    I would like to ask you what you think the problem is for the following situation. I was using my Clevo laptop like I normally do, with lots of tabs open in Chrome, musing playing on Spotify. So when I opened a new tab, suddenly the screen turned black. The music kept on playing. After a period of time I decided to try to reboot the system. When I rebooted it, it showed the starting screen and then the monitor turned off again. I rebooted it again and the monitor did not start at all. After a while the fans turned to full speed and then a beep and then the laptop turned off.

    I got it to a service shop where they said it is the graphics card and more specifically that the GPU might have unsoldered itself and that it will need to be reballed. After a couple of months of waiting they called me up and let me know they tried reballing the GPU, but without success.

    Now there are a few questions I would like to ask.

    1. Do you think it is really the graphics card and the reason for failure is the fact that the GPU unit unsoldered itself?
    2. As I don't know if they really tried to do the reballing, do you think that I should try to find another service shop and redo the reballing? Or better just abandon this idea?
    3. They suggested that it might also be the motherboard. Do you think this is a possibility? I doubt it but still.
    4. Should I try to change the graphics card with a friend's card that has another clevo? Or is it too risky and might fry his graphics card as well?
    5. Should I just buy a new graphics card? It is quite expensive at ~480Eur
    6. Any other solutions?

    Clevo P751 P751DM2-G
    Screen: 15.6”(39.62cm) FHD (1920x1080) 16:9 panel IPS - NVIDIA® G-SYNC
    CPU: Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-6700k (4.0GHz) 8MB Cache 91w
    GPU: NVIDIA® GeForce GTX 1060 (N17E-G1) 6GB GDDR5 Video RAM
    RAM: DDR4 2x16GB HyperX IMPACT 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4

    Sounds like a guess based in a common failure mode where the solder balls will crack put in a way to try an explain it to a normal consumer.

    Yes. This is what they said. That most probably the solder balls cracked.

    It definitely sounds like the GPU, but if you have a friend has a compatible form factor Clevo (which model?) to test the card, I would try your GPU in his system to rule out the GPU singularly
    while also trying his GPU in yours to make sure it is only the GPU that is at fault. You want to be sure as ~480Eur is rather steep for a replacement 1060.

    The issue is usually the contact between the die and the package is not repairable. If they have replaced the balls between the package and the gpu already then there is not much to be done.

    The thing is I am not sure if they actually tried to replace the balls. :S

    Its the GPU die cracks under the silicone die and the chip pad most likely and reballing will not help. On other side vRAM memory could behave in same way, as it will not report temp on SM BUS when there is some memory error.

    Before doing anything, first of all the vBIOS soic needs to be checked and if the GPU core and vRAM voltages are formed. If these are fine, next step is to try to launch the nVidia diagnose tool to see if the chip is still alive and doing anything.
