Hello, first of all this forum rocksso why i'm here, about 2 years ago i got this fantastic notebook, but nowadays my nvidia gtx970m is been too slow for a good gaming.
So the problems is... atm i have a unused gtx1070 FE, so my question is can i buy for example a razer core X and use the gtx1070 on my notebook ?
Or can i buy a gtx 1060/70 mxm3.0b and put it on my notebook and sell my gtx1070FE ?
.... Wich is the best thing to do ?
This my bios and TB3 version :

You could but thunderbolt would limit the speed of the 1070 quite significantly due to chipset (it connects to this and not the CPU directly) and translation (from tb3 to pcie) latencies.
There are various threads with regards to upgrades on this model, have you also checked the owners lounge? -
about the Egpu performance it's unplayable ? or just a fps drops ? it's good for fps gaming ?
Sorry for my english... -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I'd have to search them out myself, check out linus tech tips on eGPU performance, they covered the performance difference quite well.
-
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
They go over that with minimums etc, give the videos a watch.
-
i saw the LTT video about Egpu, and yes the performance drop it's about 30% but he didn't show if performance on real gaming are good about lag or tearing, and i have another question it will work on my notebook ? it's hard to setup ?
P.S:
i also forgot to say, i'm already using my notebook with external monitor 2560x1440Last edited: Nov 24, 2018 -
@Thedoktor84
If I remember correcly, there is guide on egpu.io for using an egpu with a p750. check this link https://egpu.io/build-guides/
A user installed a mxm gtx1060 here on NBR, check my signature for more infos

After some Digging:
gtx1060m MXM3.0B
Very expansive
Need custom cooler ?
Need a new powersupply ?
Need a custom bios ?
i will lose Gsync ?
performance close to my GTx970m (OC)
Egpu:
RazerCore X (Expansive like 300Euro) but if will not work i can turn it back (amazon)
GTX1070FE (i already have 0 euro)
External monitor (i already have it 27" 2560x1440 and 27" 1920x1080)
Need a custom bios ( hot swap PCIEXP ?)
Perfomance Boost over my gtx970m ( 2560x1440 egpu seems to drop less perfomance)
My notebook have a full thunderbolt 3 pciexp 4 lanes ?
It will be easy to install ? custom driver ? need to disable gtx970m ?
it's plug and play ? (i travel a lot) so when i go home i just want to plug the TB3 cable and play.... -
atm find a bios modder it's very hard, what happened ?
-
You do not need custom BIOS etc. Those threads you're reading are all for the GDC Beast, which are completely different from the Razer Core via thunderbolt for instance.
Also no need for custom drivers, should be easy to install and yes, you need to disable the GTX 970M since it can cause issues.Thedoktor84 likes this. -
Thank you... Yes upgrading MXM vga it's like a nightmare, super expansive, no support at all, bios issue, ecc... now with thunderbolt 3 and in future with the 4, MXM notebook are pretty DEAD.
i will buy the razer core and i will post here if it's all ok... -
And yeah, post some benchmarks, really interested to see the performance, I have a notebook 1070, so you could compare 1:1 -

Then again a 1060 mxm will out perform most tb3 solutions.

and an egpu with gtx1080 performs like a mxm gtx1070 or so -
because at high resolution the Cpu latency it's not a crucial factor because the bottleneck is the video card and not the cpu, (the cpu can feed enough the video card with good amount of DRAW CALL)
in 1920x1080 it's a different story expecially in older DX11 game...
maybe i'm wrong, maybe not -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Then you read wrong unfortunately, this is also just looking at averages, your max 1% frame times also suffer.

Clevo did not support any vga other than 965\970\980m on my notebook. -
these are mxm 3.0b gtx1070 cards
this is a zotac card
this is an asrock card
This is a Gecube card
this is an asrock gtx1060 from a deskmini.
This card is produced by Aetina
there is also a mxm 3.0b msi gtx1060

it's plug and play ?
Bios ?
power supply ?
heatskin ?
g-sync ?
as i know the answer is NO, all of these card are unsupported, i need to do many modification on my notebook wich i do not want to do, and after all there is always a chance that's something go wrong and these card wont works on my notebook ...
i'm wrong ? -
there is a dedicated thread for that

you can also found more informations about mxm upgrades here

No info about it...
what heatsink he used ?
custom bios ?
power supply ?
ecc.... so it's the same question ... it's possible to upgrade to a 1060\1070 mxm ? yes, it's easy or documented ? NO at all..Last edited: Dec 4, 2018 -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You need to make sure the heatsink fits the VRM/inductors but the cards should just plug in and work other than that.
-
there are too many unknowns problems, i'm not going to pay over 500 euro for a VGA wich can not work at all... -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Forget G-sync over having the MXM card, external G-sync still works fine if you have an external monitor. A 1060 would be covered by a 240W PSU no problem, a 1070 would be a stretch.

Desktop cpu/chipset are quite different power wise.

It won't perform at the same level as the MXM GTX 1070, but will outperform a 1060.
As you clearly are showcasing you really dislike the idea of having no gsync, have to mod drivers, modding heatsink and so on.Therefore I see no reason as to why you should force yourself to pay an imense amount of money to get a 1070 into your system. The forums are riddled with problems that 1070s are causing like blackscreen, Gecube cards dying, Performance problems etc.. Hell @sicily428 even linked some 1070 versions that flatout don't work in your notebook and would cause EC panic."asrock" is a dell card for instance, that will cause EC panic on all clevos.
Also if you're lucky and got one of the very few good 970Ms I would strongly recommend overclocking it. It is one of the best OC cards out there and can compete with a 1060 in terms of performance once overclocked. The good 970Ms can actually reach core clocks like 1.5 - 1.6ghz no problem.
You could also consider the route of selling your notebook and grab an Alienware instead. Now these eGPU solutions from Alienware are a very different story. They have next to no bottleneck in their eGPU solutions.

Yes that's why i'm completely avoiding the gtx1060mxm upgrade, because there are too many problems, i have already buyed a Sonnet 350w egpu enclosure at very good price (250euro) it will shipping on friday, i will post benchmark result here....
i know alienware and it's propietary egpu enclosure, maybe in the future i will buy one of these for sure.
the mxm standard in my opinion it's pretty dead, with thunderbolt 4 (pci exp 4.0) the egpu will be the standard..
P.S :
i will never buy clevo notebook anymore, the support it's completely INESISTENT ! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
While there have been many cases, there has always been some work on internal GPU upgrades, for a variety of reasons. You have been presented with the results and work required showing it is possible. That's about as good as it has ever been and is a lot better than any other brand out there.
So while I appreciate things could be easier on this front getting angry that the support is better than anyone else seems a little odd. -
@Thedoktor84 The MSI GTX 1060 is basicially plug and play, it's the 1070s that cause issues. That being said, overclocking your current 970M would result in close to the same performance as a GTX 1060, meaning it would be rather pointless opting for a minor upgrade. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
A 970M can get towards a 980M, which can get towards a 980 which is around the 1060 if you want to put it that way, not massively close in modern titles. -
And yes my notebook is supposed to be upgradable, but in fact it isnt....
-
-
if you want you could take of your heatsink and make a picture of your card. that way I can tell you if you got a good or bad 970M
Also your notebook is upgradable, it is only a pain in the ass to upgrade past a 1060.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 5, 2018 -
And from what I gather, most resellers offer updated drivers. -
-
Yes it is, but u need always to do nasty trick...
Clevo must sell gtx1060\70 compatible with all previous clevo model..... who has clevo laptop can update it easly and safe, but clevo simply do not care.. -
If you provide a picture of your card and I can see that its a good 970M, then I can make a custom vBios for you. -
