Hi I am new to his form so don't know if this post is in the right area so I apologise in advance.

    Specs
    17" clevo P870DM-G
    970m sli
    I7 6700k 500gb ssd
    Tb hdd 7200rpm

I don't have a problem as such but going by my temps am not sure if it's going to give me a problem. When gaming in big demanding games like the witcher3/division I notice that sometimes for a split second that the temp on the cpu would jump to 90/92oc only for a split second then go back down to maybe 80/88 but on average it stays about 85/88 I have only had the laptop 2 months and I have changed the heatpaste also and that is it on a cooling stand (coolermaster3) but the gpus seem fine temp wise 1 is 60 the other is 85. When I play non demanding games like cod etc the cpu temps stays around 75 max 85. Is this normal ? I know laptops can handle more heat but is this safe

Undervolt the CPU/Cache Ratio voltage by a negative offset of -80mV to -150mV.

Depending on the CPU, some CPUs won't be stable with -150mV but mine is on 4.2 GHz on all cores

The stock voltage is way too high that is why you are getting so much heat

I was actually just reading your comments on another page there. I have there is have the XTU already installed as I use it for some testing as I had problems with heat with a previous laptop. I have the i7 6700k is this easy to undervolt ? I have never done this before ? Also does that not effect performance I guess not if your at 4.2 with no problems. What do you recommend

    Thanks

Phoenix helped me undervolt by logging on to my system and here are my settings. Now the temps are fine :)

Temps while encoding a video on Nero Recode using the same settings as above but all cores on 4.2 GHz instead of 4.1 GHz

notice the speed / no throttling and the temps:

I maybe up mine to 4.2 I done some more testing myself and was amazed by the results when paying the division I was experiencing temps in mid 90s only after 10 mins of playing and hitting in 90 temps after 20 seconds of the stress test. After phoenix got in touch with me and explained what he was going to do I was sceptical as my laptop is only a month old why should this be doing this. But after he does his magic I haven't experienced over 75oc in the division after 4/5 hours of gaming lat night. If anyone is reading this thread with the same issue get in touch and phoenix will sort you out. More power and less heat I thought it was a myth myself.

Would like to do the same to the gtx 970m sli but I don't think this is possible yet without voiding the warranty and changing the bios which I don't want to do.

I should have also add that I was using a cooling fan at max power and still getting in the 90s and I haven't even powered the cooling stand on yet and experienced max temps of 75 that's a 20oc of a difference without the cooling stand

Ahh, now I understand the source of the post into @Jakamo5's thread :)

@Phoenix your annotation says 42x on all 4 cores, but @Teebhoy89 's XTU posting shows he is only 42x on 1 core, and 41x on 2,3,4 execution cores. He got a full/nice -150mV stable undervolt, which is awesome, so his CPU might be able to handle 4x 42x too :)

    Great work.

Also, I looked up the stock Turbo for the 6700k, and it is 42x/41x/41x/41x just like here, so stock + -150mV undervolt assures low temps under load, so that is great.

This needs to be the first config recommendation for new 6700k owners, IDK where you would put it, but it would sure solve a lot of questions before they get asked. :)

Yeah we were just messing around at this point it is up at 42x now we were messing around small bits at a time to make sure it was stable and the temps were okay as I ran games last night all very demanding and got highest temp of 75 amazing results underclocked and more power

I will make a noobie starters thread for all P870DM-G owners especially dedicated to j00, my old ROG friend. Give me a couple of days

PS: I did overclock his CPU at first to 42x4 but he wanted to play it first and was happy with 42,41,41,41 but now he is more confident

Few days have went past and still running great I said before about my graphics cards being up at 85/88 I was experimenting and put the core voltage to -160 was -150 before hand an now it is even cooler. I have cpu temps max 67 before it was 75 and my gpu has somehow dropped to max 72 and 55 before it was 65 and 88 so a big difference. Overall great performance and running stable after a lot of testing still getting the full power to both cpu and the gpu this is without even turning on my cooling stand

Just thought I would update as a lot of people like me where having issues

Hey Phoenix, i know its an old thread but I was wondering if it would be possible to undervolt the laptop i7 6700 non K version or does it have to be the 6700k?

you can, but I don't know the values to give you a head start, you can experiment, start by a -30mV then test for stability using AIDA64 Extreme stress test, if it passes after 3 mins with good temps / no throttling, then decrease by another -10mV, and keep going until the system freezes after 3 mins of the test so we know it's not stable, then bump up the voltage to go back to the last stable undervolt.

    Hey Phoenix,

Can this settings be replicated on a P870DM3? I wanted to undervolt my CPu but it gets reset everytime i am putting the computer into sleep.

Check CPU Usage and voltage while using Chrome. my 6700k stays at max 45*c-50*c and many cards on chrome (30*c room temp)... o_O

If usage and voltage is fine, then there might be something with your cooling, more likely thermal compound amount between heatsink.

ok buddy, even with a -150mV undervolt we are hitting 92C within only 1 min of AIDA64 Stress Test. Not good.

Please repaste your CPU using the X Cross Method and let me know how it goes. Make sure you are not wearing any socks when you touch your laptop internals otherwise you will short it. (seriously)

The X Cross method is the best in my experience as once the heatsink is fitted, it provides the maximum coverage with the least air bubbles

Wow I know this thread is old but I'm DEFINATELY following this one, I'm sending my laptop back for a GPU swap soon, but never even thought about under-volting my CPU. More power less voltage/temps nice. Good work Phoenix.

You always want to ride the voltage just ahead of the crashing point (with a bit of margin) to get the best temps, where that is, that's the silicon lottery.
