Clevo P870KM Desktop. It's worth buying? Owners opinions please

Hello guys, i recently sold my old alienware m17x r4, has been an insane good laptop. Except for cooling problems

I was thinking to purchase this clevo laptop and i would Like to know (from who own this laptop) or know/used this laptop if could be a good laptop to buy.

I never owned a clevo before but i know the quality from this brand. How good is this P870KM? this would be the specs:

I choice this laptop since i find useful the mxm GPU option and Desktop CPU changeble option. I'm afraid about temps to be honest. It should last atleast 5 years or so.

Also what is better:

Or

Intel Core i5-9600K Unlocked | 9MB SmartCache | 3.70~4.60 GHz | 6C/6T | vPro | TDP 95W

65w vs 95w? For better cooling? Usually i do not play the latest games titles everytime, more like i'm that kind of player who is stick with some few titles and play that titles with friends in multiplayer online mode.

9600 vs 9600k, same chip basically but the k is unlocked so can be tweaked to any value.

 

I would strongly recommend the superior p870tm1-g over this laptop, the cpu and gpu heatsink are connected together. This is not good for the cpu at all if you have a dual gpu setup. Essentially all the heat from the gpus will go directly to the cpu heatsinks causing the cpu to throttle.

Clevo learnt their lesson and made the p870tm1-g. Resolving all the mistakes of the p870km including the flawed heatsink design!

 

First of all, you can install separate CPU and GPU heatsink in KM too - you don`t have to have it combined. So you can have non vapour chamber heatsink for GPU and suitable for this configuration CPU heatsink (without screws to mount GPU vapour chamber and a place to put thermal pad). With this cooling setup it`s sold as KM (non "1"). He`s not even mentioning dual GPU setup, he clearly points at single 1070 so it`s clearly this.

Second, you can use TM vapour chamber for GPU and the same standard CPU heatsink for KM (non 1, sold with single GPU) together, without any modifications (it just fits).

So saying that KM is worse because of combined CPU and GPU cooling is a bit misleading, as there are options to use KM without this (inferior, I agree) cooling setup. There are other reasons one could point TM as a better buy than KM, but connected heatsinks is not one of them.

 

The KM came with multiple revisions of the cooling that either copied the DM3's joined cooling, or had them not joined. With the shared setup, it's swings and roundabouts, yes gpu heat raises cpu temp but cpu only performance gets better cooling when it's under load. Anyway, unless the listing mentions "vapour chamber heatsink" I would assume it includes only the standard 1070 single gpu heatsink with 3x heatpipes, which has no shared component.

The vapour chamber is insanely better cooling and is highly recommended for a future upgrade, with both fans populated it will keep the single gpu well cool at low fan speeds. It'd add some cost though.

Re cpu... Ignore Intel's tdp numbers. They aren't real consumption. Either 6 core 6 thread i5 will be easily cooled at stock, and running similar multipliers, they will consume about the same real power. Only get the K if you can see yourself overclocking to remedy cpu bottlenecks.

So yes, while you can't buy a model with better cooling potential, a P870 is a big heavy chunky solid beast and would be somewhat wasted on such "low" spec. It would make sense if you intend to upgrade down the line. But keep in mind that MXM GPU prices don't drop that much and with 10 series and especially now RTX they are coming off historically high starting prices, and a CPU upgrade beyond 9th gen is completely unknown, and should you decide to upgrade the CPU to something hungrier the CPU cooling may need some work (the better P870TM heatsink is able to fit with some modding).

 

If you are willing to play then you can get a lot over the already strong base.

Thank you for your answer, sadly the p870tm1-g, starts at 2800€ in my country, i think would be too much for what i'm going to do. I downloaded the user manual for the p870km-g model and seems the heatsinks are not shared.



This system seems a better upgrade from clevo, to me.

 

Thank you for your answer, yes as i posted up here, seems they choose separate heatsinks and this is a good option for me. Sadly the p870km is in promo version for only 1500€ and the TM model starts at 2800. Yes i would get the single GPU model for now

About GPU/CPU upgrade you brought a good point there. I would think about it, overall i think i'm going to get the K version since is not so different as you said

 

Yes the DM3 was the one that shared. The TM has an even better CPU cooler that can be retrofitted with a backplate for the CPU.
