Hello
Two years ago I bought a custom-made laptop called Stylenote W243HVQ by its Swedish reseller. It is a Clevo but I don't have any other product number. CPU is Intel Core i7-2720QM 2,2 GHz. No dedicated graphics and I'm running Ubuntu on it.
The noise of the fan is unbearable and all it takes is that I start the computer and open thunderbird and firefox with a few tabs and it begins. Then it just gets worse. Even if I leave it idle for an hour with only these programs running it will stay noisy the whole time. It also has a humming, vibrating quality to it that is extremely annoying. It's driving me nuts.
It doesn't sound like anything is broken, it just seems like the fan is going on full power really easily. And for a reason too, it seems, because I have checked temperatures and they quickly reach 80-90 C with just the above programs running. Levels might go up and down a bit though, and if I shut down all programs it slows down and chills a bit.
The problem has been there since I bought the computer but it might be that it has gotten worse with time and OS upgrades. I am getting no help from the reseller and I have tried some forums now and then to no avail. Now I found this forum and you guys are my last resort.
Is it supposed to be like this? Is there anything that can be done? I bought an expensive laptop with good specs (at the time) but I haven't been able to enjoy it because of this problem. At this point I am desperate to throw the machine out because I can't stand another day with this noise. If I could resolve this issue however, I would gladly keep it for another while.
Unfortunately I am nothing close to a hacker and I have very little knowledge of Linux and Ubuntu so please bear that in mind if you have suggestions on what to do.
And one more thing on a sidenote, as I wrote this message the first time (I had come this far...) suddenly my text was erased letter by letter as if someone was holding down backspace, and after half the text was deleted the computer shut down. This same thing has happened once or twice before, and that really makes me want to not only get rid of the computer but break it to pieces with a sledge hammer.
Please help!

Try cleaning the fans and heatsink fins. Use compressed air to blow them out. You will need to open the computer a little to do this. After doing that if it is still too much, then you can try redoing the thermal paste, underclocking the cpu, and try the Prema bios for your model.

Ok, thank you. I would have no idea of how to "redo the thermal paste". Also, what is a Prema bios, where can I find it and how will it help me?
Thanks! -
1) buy a miniture phillips screwdriver.
2)buy a can of compressed air
3)remove the base plate, usually 6-8 screws
4)hold the fan or fans with one finger or put something like a pen in the fins to stop it spinning and then spray away. if you havnt ever cleaned the fans out your lucky its lasted this long. its recommended to do it every 3-6 months and if you have a cat or dog even clean it out more often.
if you know nothing about bios then leave it well alone for now.
different model but gives a good idea what to do Puget Systems Traverse Pro M550i Component Replacement - YouTube
this is the way to clean under the fans and repaste their cpu and gpu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSyH-gfSsxI -

Yes, first clean the heat sinks. These can fill up with dust and hair, and it can greatly reduce the air flow. Be carefull not to bend the thin metal sheets, or fins in the heatsink. But as long as you are just blowing are, you should be fin. Be sure not to touch any thing inside, as your hands might have static electricity. But over all cleaning the heat sinks is easy and safe to do.

I also formatted and installed brand new OS:s so now I feel like I have a new computer!
Thank you! -
Glad it worked out.

If it has been that long I advise people to do it outside or have a dust buster ready for the cloud lol.
