I'm planning on getting a Clevo W170ER with a I7 3720QM processor for good performance for future need and 1600 MHz memory speed.

The thing is that I want a silent system and most of the time I do not need the speed, even when I use the processor. I'm thinking of if I can underclock the processor to lower the power consumption and then less heat.

I have heard of a guy that had a i7 870 desktop system and lowered the systems consumption with 40W when only the CPU had 100% load by disable turbo boost, HT and lowered the voltage to little over 1V.

The problem is that I do not use Windows but the GNU/Linux dist Ubuntu. Is their any programs that I can use or change settings with example GRUB (Boot loader) or anything ells to change settings in the area I'm looking at?

What are the options in the BIOS that can lower CPU power consumption?
