A tiling window manager. I has it's own status bar and lockscreen so combined with SLiM it's pretty much the most minimal "full desktop experience" possible.

    * Expecting the users to switch the keyboards themselves. This is a huge red flag in my book.
    * They don't do any actual maintenance outside of software -- from what I understand when things need to be RMA'd, they ship them to someone else.
    * Quality of their customer support isn't great. I've never had any bad experiences with them personally, but from the few nightmarish stories I've read on forums I wouldn't risk doing business with them again (I've purchased one laptop from them six or seven years ago)
    * Mythlogic is just all around better. Comparable prices, better support, friendlier staff.

I also have a bad taste in my mouth from a conversation I had on Google+ with one of their employees blatantly making things up about how much work they put into modifying their computers; I have a Clevo W740SU straight from Mythlogic and I just had to edit a few configuration files to get everything working perfectly in Arch Linux. Took all of two days.

    Nice and complete review !

So to resume the main problem is that they didn't treat the keyboard problem as a warranty case. I agree they should have pay the two way shipping and take care of the replacement.

I don't think it's appropriate to ask System76 to "treat the keyboard problem as a warranty case". While the keyboard is bad it's not broken in the strict sense.

Well as soon as they agree that this is a hardware failure on a specific batch from the factory , I would say that the least they could do is do the swapping of the keyboard in their premises. Sending the keyboard to the customer is just unacceptable.

Update: Mine has a dead pixel. I bought the protection so Mythlogic is going to fix it for me. Other than that, still loving the computer. The keyboard definitely gets better with time (unless you have a defective one)

Ouch! Did the dead pixel develop over time? Or was your screen replaced when it was at Mythlogic? I've been told mine had to be replaced for backlight bleeding issues. It was flawless otherwise. I had tested it extensively for dead pixels. I hope the new one doesn't have any dead pixels.

    So many dead pixels.

I must be a really lucky person. I work in a building full of LCD panels and I've seen maybe 2 or 3 dead pixels in my life so far, with at least one resulting from physical damage which was totally my fault.

it gets better with time but i've discovered that i will start missing keystrokes on another keyboards.

additionally, i feel with having to punch the keys so hard to register (unless in you stike in center slightly hard), my hand (starting from finger tips till elbow) hurts.

Developed over time. It happened during just after my Linux install. And mine has a backlight bleed issue too, but it's not very severe (pretty normal with these kind of displays).

Is yours one of the ones where 40% of the spacebar doesn't work, or if you hit the button in the corner it doesn't work at all? Because those are defective. With my replacement I definitely have to hit it with medium strength, but I'm not pounding on them like some people claim they have to.

There's a batch of keyboards that are faulty, and there are a batch that are fine -- I think some people just don't like the keyboard so they consider the good ones faulty.

Woo... at least you didn't have one like mine.
Two bruises developed over time (don't really know how, wasn't impacted in any way). They were somewhat abnormal, with stuck red pixels going across both axes like diffraction spikes.
That screen was replaced after it was cracked, though.
The new one is aweshum :D

Here's a couple comparison photos I was able to take comparing the W740SU to the P34G. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the W740SU I go to boot up (not the seller's fault, small technical issue on my end) so I couldn't run any kind of live comparisons. Note that the protective plastic cover was still attached to the W740SU, it wasn't actually that shiny underneath.

    P34G vs W740SU - Imgur

Also, my apologies for poor photo quality.

I've already returned the W740SU, but I'd still be happy to answer questions about both laptops (remember that I never got the W740SU to boot).

Honestly, from the pictures I think the W740SU is the nicer looking laptop. I actually really like the "cheap" matte finish, and the clickpad is a +1 compared to a traditional touchpad.

Though I guess in pure performance the Nvidia in the P43G is superior, but the Intel Iris 5200 has much better Linux support so for me the W740SU is the superior computer.

How the battery life on the P43G? That's the one thing I really don't like about my W740SU

So it's comparable then. Sounds like they're pretty damn close then.

How cool does it run? the W740SU runs surprisingly cool for the hardware it houses

I simply can't understand why people avoid Intel+NVidia setups just because of Linux support.

Bumblebee works. It does, just as it should. And now days some distros even have it packaged well so all you need to do is typing 3 lines of command to install the needed packages. What's the problem?

Probably because there's still no full official support from nvidia after several years of optimus, just partial support.

Because Linux is my main operating system both at work and at home. While Optimus works, it's a less than optimal solution and sometimes things break when upgrading and Optimus will eat my battery without me realizing what's going on.

Because of that I ran Ubuntu for a while, and I will admit that Optimus worked much smoother on Ubuntu than it ever did for me on Debian or Arch. But when it came time to plopping ~$1600 on a workhorse, I didn't want to have to deal with Nvidia. I was content with just getting an Intel 4400 and calling it a day, but since the 5200 works under the open source drivers AND plays video games decently, I opted to go for it.

That question really should be turned around, too; why do any Linux users still buy laptops with Nvidia Optimus?

Depends on the type of workload. For me it's GPGPU, which simply doesn't work with Intel under Linux. I'm more into AMD than NV in this generation though. For others, it might be DCC OpenGL viewport via Bumblebee, or background rendering via the NV binary blob directly.

For gaming, I'd stick to Windows for now.

I'm just a lowly sysadmin, so the Intel 5200 fits the bill perfectly for what I want. Compatibility without any headaches in Linux, and Dark Souls in Windows.

This is what I wanted to hear. I only play XIV and LoL nowadays, so a dedicated GPU isn't a high criteria for me anymore. I'm still waiting on the Acer S3-392...but that model seems like it'll never launch.

Yes and yes. I opted for the cooling upgrade through xotic pc and it seems as though while they were installing the heatsinks they slightly disconnected the keyboard's cable and didn't bother to check before they shipped it. haha After I reconnected it I found out the windows key and some of the fn functions weren't working, so I got in contact with xotic pc. They forwarded me to sager's RMA service who required me to pay the cost of the keyboard as collateral, in case they determined that I caused the damage. The keyboard they sent me differed from the original in two ways: the metal plate was firmly attached to the keyboard and the cable was hanging freely to be wired under the plate; unlike the original which was wired through the hole in the center.
I'm almost happy that happened, though. It forced me to get used to the idea of using an external keyboard with this laptop. If you catch my drift. haha

Really good machine. Really bad keyboard.

Hey guys how are your keyboards coping? I've just gotten mine and the keyboard is driving me nuts. I didn't expect it to be this bad even though I've tested it for a while prior to buying it.
Anyone tried modding it before? To improve the contact points. the W230ST's keyboard is miles better than this.

So I finally got my laptop back from my second RMA. The good news is they fixed all my problems and basically built me a new one from scratch. The bad part is they used a different keyboard, and this has another pretty large deadzone on the spacebar.

I'm really tired of dealing with RMA. I paid for this laptop on July 28th, and it's November 8th now and I still don't have something usable in my hands. I'm going to contact Mythlogic sometime today.

I feel kind of bad being so needy but I paid $1700 for a working laptop, not something that's "just good enough". I thought I was buying high end bleeding edge technology (Iris 5200), and while the performance of the actually hardware is fantastic the keyboard is just so shoddy. I can't in good faith recommend anything made by Clevo to anyone.

The one thing I will say is that Mythlogic's support has been top notch every step of the way. I'm hoping maybe they'll send me a keyboard with instructions on how to replace it myself, but then I risk screwing up the laptop. I can RMA it again but considering I bought this laptop for school, I feel like I haven't even been able to use it for anything school related yet and an entire semester is over already.

I'm not sure what I should do.

There is a video instruction on Youtube that teaches you how to dismatle the keyboard. It is quite simple actually, provided you can get your hands on a good keyboard.

Is the quality of the current keyboard hugely different from your previous one? Could you kindly check with Mythlogic on why are the keyboard vastly different? Perhaps we can find out how to identify the good and bad batches of the keyboard. Im finding for a replcement for mine too.

Yeah I know, but at this point in time I feel kind of bad because I've already RMA'd twice. I'm going to contact them Monday about getting a replacement keyboard to me -- I know that it's supposedly pretty easy to switch the keyboard yourself (I've seen the YouTube video!) but I'm kind of afraid of borking something and voiding my warranty. I mean I spent ~$1700 on this laptop after all my upgrades, it'd be a shame to lose it.

Edit: Now I realize you meant a new keyboard. I'm definitely going to ask them for that, then.

If you do receive a better replacement keyboard do you mind checking and comparing the current one with the new one? Perhaps a way to identify by some batch number or revision number on the keyboard? Thanks :)
