Hello all. Firstly I would like to confirm that the 6990M works in the W860CU

Secondly I know there is a system bios that allows complete control over the 920xm. Where can I get this bios and how to update it on this machine?

    Cheers

as an aside my cpu is faulty and I would therefore like to ascertain what is wrong with it before I return it that is why I would to update the bios. :)

the fact that you got the 6990m to work is really cool but... sorry about the cpu. Are you going to get a refund?

Exchange. However I am starting to think perhaps the cpu isn't the culprit. Could be motherboard gpu vregs.. in which case I am stuffed :(

    Throttlestop.

If that's not working for you, then it might be a bad CPU. Remember that the W8x0cu boards have weak regs, never set the CPU to higher than 65TDP. In your case, I would make a 45TDP profile for gaming.

I was using throttlestop. Never higher than 67 tdp and 65 tdc which was enough to allow 2.8ghz non stop stable OC even at 100% load across all 4 cores.

Could be CPU vregs but who knows. I want to wait till I get this 920xm exchanged so at least I can rule the cpu out for good.

Starting to think I should have gone for a MSI GX660 or M15x!

Have you considered buying a desktop? It would make your quest for better graphics a lot easier...

Lol a desktop takes up too much space and I need portability. 10 years ago desktops were all the rage. They are part of the past for me.

It is a Dell OEM 6990M 2GB GDDR5 card (black PCB) probably used in the M18x. It works fine just like the 6970M.

Did you get a chance to swap the processor and test the 6990 a bit more? I'm interested in the loaded temps vs the 6970 in the 860cu. What heatsink are you using and what mods were necessary to make it fit and stay cool?

I have the 860 with the 5870 and am interested in this route. seems no one else has tried the 6990 in this machine and I'm a lil bit worried about the extra heat under load compared to the 6970.

Still waiting on RMA. Hopefully get chip back early next week. I also would love to bench this thing.

There is good chance though cpu might not be the problem, which means I won't be able to try it out fully.

I want to give it the benefit of the doubt but if its the motherboard then it is goodbye to sager from me.

I don't think heat will be an issue. WIth properly modded heatsink and thermal pad placement the w860cu doesn't break a sweat with the 6970M even when heavily OCed heat wise.

Me too. I already have had a motherboard problem in the past. I do have a cheap replacment lined up though in this probable case. A empty M15x. I will simply dump all my components into it. Sad really ..

Hasn't been the best experience with me first and only clevo lappy.

I got few mates who got their 860cu in bad shape and it was MOBO related everytime..I can't believe the CPU chip would die this way..nice cfg btw
