Why is it that when I enable silent mode in this laptop, it doesn't even slow down the fans? The fan noise is the same whether it is disabled or enabled.

I don't really get it either. It's suppose to lock the fans at a constant speed (think 2nd gear), while at the same time seriously throttling the system. The only time it'd have an effect is if you're gaming. Well, why would you want to cut down on your system performance if you're gaming? Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't think of a situation where "Silent Mode" would be of any use whatsoever.

Oh alright. At least I know that I'm not the only one experiencing this. I came from an M860TU laptop and the silent mode in that laptop makes the fan ran really slower.
Are you using Win7 x64? -

Perhaps I can touch on this one. I do not know if this is the same on the older 1.00.01 BIOS as I have never tried silent mode on that, but after flashing the 1.00.05 BIOS, I decided to test it. Silent mode on my W870CU will not lock the CPU or GPU fan to minimum speed, rather it will lock the CPU and GPU performance to a certain level so that the fans will, ideally, stay at minimum speed. On my notebook, silent mode restricts my 920XM to 1.46GHz with Turbo Boost disabled. It also restricts my GPU, however the restriction is a bit wonky. My GPU, as reported through GPU-Z, still scales up to it's max level of 500/1250/800, but is only reported to have 25% core load when running a GPU stress test. During the test, the GPU will slowly scale back down to 400/800/400, then to 300/600/300, but still reports the core load as 25%. There is no change in performance while the GPU is stepping down during the stress test, which means that my GPU is indeed operating at 300/600/300 as it's max when silent mode is enabled. GPU-Z and Furmark may be inaccurately reading my GPU's external clocks, but the true clock set that the GPU will operate in silent mode is the 2D desktop level, which is 25% the performance of 500/1250/800, with my clocks atleast.
With that said, silent mode keeps the components operating at a low performance level to keep the fans from spinning up past their first ramping threshold. If, for some reason, the CPU or GPU temperature does exceed the first threshold, like in kevindd992002's case as his CPU temps are over the first threshold of 50*C since he is in a tropical region, then the fans will still ramp up accordingly for obvious reasons. But so far after my testing, that hasn't happened to me yet. So you can bet that silent mode will keep your components on the down low enough to prevent the fans from spinning faster. -
well, right before i got my 5797, my buddy had his 5793 on silent mode without me knowing. i got on it and loaded a game, and it suddenly shut off after a few mins
thats right, it overheated lol
so yea... lesson learned. good thing it wasnt on mine haha -

On the M570xU, silent mode did not restrict the GPU, rather it just kept the GPU fan at minimum. The new silent mode prevents mistakes like that from happening.
