    Hi everybody,

I have a serious problem with my ATi HD 5870M graphics card and it's heatsink and need your help!

It started with some shutdowns while gaming due to overheating of my graphics card. I measured over 100°C (212° F) with GPU-Z. After heaving read a lot about the heating problems of the 5870 I decided to change the thermal paste (bought AC5).
To cut a very long story short it ended up in a disaster. My reseller used a thermal pad instead of paste to fill the gap (!) between gpu die and heatsink. I sliced the pads of the RAM, I removed them...still no good contact (there was no imprint on the heatsink except on one edge). Then I noticed that the heatsink seems to rest on something of the graphics card (those three grey somethings next to the RAM) so heatsink and gpu die can't fit at all!

I searched for some pictures of other heatsinks and found this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/com...tsinks-designed-ati-mobility-hd-5870-new.html

My heatsink looks different! What the...? I have to add that I got my notebook with a wrong graphics card in the first place. I've got a Nvidia GTX 285M instead of my ATi. So is it possible that they changed the graphics card but didn't change the heatsink? (I assume that there are different ones?!)

I attach some photos of my heatsink.
Has anyone seen this heatsink in combination with an ATi HD 5870M?
Can anyone confirm that this is a Nvidia GTX285M's heatsink?

    Thanks in advance, guys!

PS: I can't get through to my reseller. Perhaps he's on vacation or something.

PPS: At first I didn't notice the whole problem and ran my notebook. I made it to GPU-Z and saw some nice 175°C. The graphics card still runs but do you think this could made some major damage to it?

The heatsink in the picture you posted is definitely the one meant for the 5870, if yours is different, you should get it replaced. I don't know what the max temperature for the 5870 is, but I don't think it's going to damage the card to run it into the low or mid 90s.

Just looked up a pic of the 285M, looks like it'd fit the heatsink you posted perfectly.

    Example from this eBay auction:
Nvidia GTX 285M mobile graphic card

    You have the wrong heatsink.

Oh lord! I've got an HD5870M with a GTX285M heatsink...  No wonder things went totally wrong.

At least I reached my reseller eventually. The notebook will be send back to clevo and they'll check it. I hope they don't blame me since I modified the heatsink and it's thermal pads. To be honest I'd like the graphics card to be replaced... I almost fried it and changed the heatsink way too often.

    Thanks for you answers!

I'm not sure it has to be replaced. The automatic shutdown should prevent damage.

True enough. But I think he deserves the correct heatsink for his purchase :)

Another reseller told me that I probably have a wrong graphics card, too. It says 6-71-W870L-D02 on it which would indicate that it's the W870CU version of the ATi HD5870M. I didn't know that there are different versions anyway?!
There's only one version I could find to buy e.g. here in the forum, so what do you think about that?

The NB will be picked up tomorrow, then we'll see...
