has anyone tried to install newer GPUs in the Clevo X7200? if so, which ones work, and how?

I meant with, for example, the series 7M and 8m of Nvidia..

There is no established criterion with either series in the X7200 at the moment. You've already seen this, but it's the only thing that hints at compatibility (as far as I've seen).
-
and that is good... I'm not brave enough to experiment myself

If you don't feel comfortable enough with trying it, it's best to ask around and wait for someone else to make the attempt.
-
smarts too, but also a certain degree of bravery

Even in the case the X7200 would work with GTX 780m/ 880m GTX I think it makes much more sense to buy a new notebook. The X7200 still is a "solid" machine, but a little bit obsolete, as it doesn´t support SATA-III, it can´t use full 1600MHz RAM (it will be downclocked), and the older it gets the more you have the risk that something will brick. 2 880m´s will be over 1000 Euros, and so it would make a lot more sense to buy a new notebook, like P370SM or P570WM.
Since I enjoyed my "adventure" running GTX 680m in SLI in my X7200 (still running perfectly!) I could imagine to try GTX 880m SLI, but as I said above, I then think I will be better off with a new notebook.
(will wait till 900m though) -
very true. but I really would rather keep this for a long time, as I quite like my notebook
so, if you try or someone else tries it and it works, please do tell me -
has anyone tried the 8M series? how well do they perform?

If you are a modder and like to overcloco/tweak see if you can find a cheap 680m as it will overclock to a very similar region.
-
region of what?
-
Being essentially the same chip (GK104 Kepler core) the 880M is a 680M with higher clock rates for GPU&MEM plus one more active shader block. Meaning that essentially you should be able to overclock 680M to similar clock speeds and achieve roughly the same performance (if you want exactly the same performance you need to oc tad bit higher to compensate for the shader block).
-
really, so in theory it should work being the sme..
-
-
oh right I keep forgetting that

is there any difference between the vbios? one that you recommend?
-
There are some differences, you will see them in Benches and temps.
I use "80.04.67.00.01" - can do the best overclocking. It´s very stable for me.Dark_Ansem likes this. -
have some new tests been performed? -
I bought them from one.de. You couldn´t buy them in the shop, I did some PM with somebody from one.de over at the hardwareluxx forum and here at notebookreviewforum, too. It was a very good deal for a good price.
The last Benches I did you can find as a comparison to a P570WM that HTWingnut did test: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...np9570-clevo-p570wm-review-2.html#post9098213
Some of the Benches are a little higher NOW with new drivers - like Firestrike, a couple of hundred points more (~6800 I think) - but you can take a good look of what the X7200 is still capable.
All the benches are done with the vBios version "80.04.67.00.01". Some benchmark scores like 3DMark Vantage were a little bit smaller with other vBios.Dark_Ansem likes this. -
oh no I meant if there were new experiments with newer gpus, not performance tests
-
No, if so, I would have posted it
-
sigh, I really have to stick with the 680M then?
-
I know, it´s a hard burden
, but if you want to be sure the cards will work, it seems to me that no one else has tested anything above 680m... so everything else would be an experiment
.
-
hence why I was hoping for some brave soul...
unless the 680M can be overclocked... and I'd still need a step-by-step guide -
You will find anything you need in the Thread in my signature to make the cards work in SLI ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...i-gtx-680m-how-works-impressions-benches.html) - the new tool from Anatolymik allows you to use any new driver from nvidia in SLI.
You can overclock the GTX 680m´s. No problem. -
Happy Easter
of course I can, matter is: how much does that help? -
How much does what help?
Overclocking? Depends on the cards, how much OC they can do.
You can easily reach GTX 780m (SLI) performance and more with OC.
I don´t overclock my cards (did that just for benching and testing) and can play any game I want in the highest settings.
Personally, as I said before, in your situation, I would just buy a new laptop. Seems you are not too familiar with setting up new cards, configure them etc., and the GTX 680m´s still are expensive. So it would make more sense to buy a new laptop, I think. Less stress, more fun.
Oh and yes: Happy Easter! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yeah I would start with a smaller project before diving right into the deep end.
-
really? does it work that good?
-
Yep, SLI runs very stable and just see what a single GTX 880m can play (e.g. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M - Notebookcheck.com Technik/FAQ) - and then remember that GTX 680m SLI is still more powerful. That´s why I always point you to the benches - just take a look and then compare...
Even a single GTX 680m still is powerful and easy to overclock.Dark_Ansem likes this. -
Now where can I find a 680M to replace my 480M SLI setup?
-
niiiiiiiiiice I only need to find a reseller with everything..
-
-
any news on this?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You tell us! Did you find a card?
-
Nope. I wanted to ask laptopmonkey, but their customer service is terrible. they don't answer and they only sell the card, not the heatsink and whatnot.
-
has someone experimented more?
@Tirenz, looking at you -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I doubt it looking at his sig, the 680M is still the safest bet.
-
it's still very expensive, but I do not wish to change my laptop, as it has an amazing CPU...
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The 680M offeres almost all the performance of the higher end cards at the moment though, so not really worth trying too hard until the new cards come out.
-
anyone knows a trustworthy UK or Germany seller of cards?
-
For anyone who might still be interested, I had found a thread (forgot where) where this guy in South Korea tested a 980M in an X7200 and did not work.
