has anyone tried to install newer GPUs in the Clevo X7200? if so, which ones work, and how?

There is no established criterion with either series in the X7200 at the moment. You've already seen this, but it's the only thing that hints at compatibility (as far as I've seen).

I think that's more smarts than it is bravery. ;) If you don't feel comfortable enough with trying it, it's best to ask around and wait for someone else to make the attempt.

Even in the case the X7200 would work with GTX 780m/ 880m GTX I think it makes much more sense to buy a new notebook. The X7200 still is a "solid" machine, but a little bit obsolete, as it doesn´t support SATA-III, it can´t use full 1600MHz RAM (it will be downclocked), and the older it gets the more you have the risk that something will brick. 2 880m´s will be over 1000 Euros, and so it would make a lot more sense to buy a new notebook, like P370SM or P570WM.
Since I enjoyed my "adventure" running GTX 680m in SLI in my X7200 (still running perfectly!) I could imagine to try GTX 880m SLI, but as I said above, I then think I will be better off with a new notebook. ;)
    (will wait till 900m though)

very true. but I really would rather keep this for a long time, as I quite like my notebook :)
so, if you try or someone else tries it and it works, please do tell me :)

If you are a modder and like to overcloco/tweak see if you can find a cheap 680m as it will overclock to a very similar region.

Being essentially the same chip (GK104 Kepler core) the 880M is a 680M with higher clock rates for GPU&MEM plus one more active shader block. Meaning that essentially you should be able to overclock 680M to similar clock speeds and achieve roughly the same performance (if you want exactly the same performance you need to oc tad bit higher to compensate for the shader block).

In theory yes, but in practice probably no. Even gtx680m's require one of the older firmwares in order to work (at least on p1x0hm series, not 100% sure about x7200).

Every Clevo vBios for GTX 680m and even the MSI vBios for GTX 680m will work in the X7200 (I tried every vBios there except the Dell vBios): :)

There are some differences, you will see them in Benches and temps.
I use "80.04.67.00.01" - can do the best overclocking. It´s very stable for me.

I bought them from one.de. You couldn´t buy them in the shop, I did some PM with somebody from one.de over at the hardwareluxx forum and here at notebookreviewforum, too. It was a very good deal for a good price. :)

The last Benches I did you can find as a comparison to a P570WM that HTWingnut did test: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...np9570-clevo-p570wm-review-2.html#post9098213
Some of the Benches are a little higher NOW with new drivers - like Firestrike, a couple of hundred points more (~6800 I think) - but you can take a good look of what the X7200 is still capable.
All the benches are done with the vBios version "80.04.67.00.01". Some benchmark scores like 3DMark Vantage were a little bit smaller with other vBios. ;)

I know, it´s a hard burden ;), but if you want to be sure the cards will work, it seems to me that no one else has tested anything above 680m... so everything else would be an experiment :D.

unless the 680M can be overclocked... and I'd still need a step-by-step guide

    How much does what help?
Overclocking? Depends on the cards, how much OC they can do.
You can easily reach GTX 780m (SLI) performance and more with OC.
I don´t overclock my cards (did that just for benching and testing) and can play any game I want in the highest settings.

Personally, as I said before, in your situation, I would just buy a new laptop. Seems you are not too familiar with setting up new cards, configure them etc., and the GTX 680m´s still are expensive. So it would make more sense to buy a new laptop, I think. Less stress, more fun ;).

Oh and yes: Happy Easter! :)

Yep, SLI runs very stable and just see what a single GTX 880m can play (e.g. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M - Notebookcheck.com Technik/FAQ) - and then remember that GTX 680m SLI is still more powerful. That´s why I always point you to the benches - just take a look and then compare... ;)
Even a single GTX 680m still is powerful and easy to overclock.

The 680M offeres almost all the performance of the higher end cards at the moment though, so not really worth trying too hard until the new cards come out.

For anyone who might still be interested, I had found a thread (forgot where) where this guy in South Korea tested a 980M in an X7200 and did not work.
