It powers on, but does it power off? Or just keep running (ie the fans) but you see nothing?
What video card do you have? I've heard of older nvidia cards (8xxx or 9xxx series) dieing on people. I assume it used to work and now it has stopped.
Did you do anything like try to flash the BIOS or install a new video driver prior to the problem?
A little more information about what happened leading up to the problem would help. -
hi thanks for the reply!
No it dosent power off, itll stay on for however long and yes nothing is displayed still.
prior to this happening it was giving me usb overcurrent warnings on post and had been shutting down and blue screening as a result.
the video is SIS on board,
i took apart the laptop to inspect the ports and now its giving me this problem!
nothing else was done prior to this i.e bios flash etc.
thanks -
That usually means that you have something plugged into a usb port that is drawing too much power. Do you still have something plugged in there? Try rebooting with nothing plugged into the computer.
Motherboards don't like excessive power running through them. However, if you got that message many times, the damage might already be done.
When you used to get the message, it would bsod and restart. Did it start normally after that or did it always bsod/restart in an endless loop? -
Also, examine all your usb ports and make sure there is nothing foreign stuck in there and that none of the pins are touching eachother making the system short out.
-
No nothing is plugged into the ports, and as far as i can see the pins arent broken. Yes the system will restart after but it did have trouble booting after it crashed sometimes.
Would it be worth plugging something into a USB to see if theres power going to it? like a thumb drive with an LED?
This laptop was given to me so i dont know its history apart from the faults its got already.
thanks for your help so far. -
Try plugging an external monitor (vga?) in to see if the video still works.
Function Key Combination
You can use the Fn + F7 key combination to toggle through the display
options:
• Notebook Only
• External Display Only
• Notebook + External Display
Make sure you give the displays enough time to refresh. -
Ive tried that, still no output. Have also just tried unplugging the panel that has a USB port and audio jacks on it to see if it would cancel out a possible fault but still no luck
do u think the board has blown? -
I'm getting that feeling. But I didn't want to say it. There might be a problem with the mobo.
I'm out of ideas. And not just because Bayern's about to play ManU.
It's getting power, so it's not the battery or ac adapter. Some part of the mobo is working cause lights and fans are coming on. You weren't messing with the cpu, so I wouldn't suggest reseating it. Yuo have an onboard video adapter, so nothing to do there. Although that sounds like the problem. You can't change the video without changing the mobo, afaik. So, the only thing left would be to try a new mobo. But it might not be worth it.
Maybe someone else has some ideas. -
Ok thanks very much for your help anyway. Enjoy the game!!

If your willing to trust a stranger, (me) (not that I'm strange or anything) I could try the mobo in a M760S that I've got in bits at the moment, and I'd be able to tell you if the onboard vga/sis chip is borked.
If it works in mine, then there would be only 2 possible causes left. The LCD inverter or the LCD panel backlight tube is borked on yours.
Asuming you live in the UK of course. -
Hiya, theres no output to an external monitor either so i know its not the LCD, and if the on board graphics chip has given up then the whole mobo has to be replaced, im having trouble finding a replacement unless you know of any?
Yes i am in the UK (South coast)
Laptop is a friends so i cant really send it off, thanks anyway. -
Higrade UK will do it for about £75 (if it's out of waranty) plus postage there and back, so your looking roughly at a £100+ figure.
I told them to go suck the fat one, and bought my daughter an ex display Toshiba for £200 in Tesco instead. Half the price for missing 1 key, so was quite pleased as it was a better spec anyways.

If your friend is dumping the mobo, I'll gladly take it off his/her hands, as I'm after the genuine Bios rom. (A friend of mine can copy the bios off the bios chip on the mobo) The guys at Higrade wouldn't send me one (they wanted £75+P&P regardles. I'm using a standard Clevo bios on it at the moment, it works, but I'd rather have the Higrade one. -
Yeah i dont fancy sending it away as its probably gunna cost more than its worth!
Bizarrly i just worked briefly, loaded almost into windows but crashed in the midst of an update! now wont start up again. grrr
Ive had the pleasure of trying to fix 2 Hi-grade lappys now and theyve both been s***.
Ill find out what they want to do with it if i cant fix it and let you know! -
That would be great, cheers. I would only need the motherboard to copy the bios from it, and I'd send it back to them (if they wanted it back) and cover the cost of postage.
I can't get hold of the genuine article anywhere, and I won't send a complete laptop to Higrade Essex for silly money just to do what I can do myself. -
Hi bomp, i've got a laptop with a suspected faulty screen, if i could send you the screen and mobo ( so you can copy the bios ) to test the screen, and tell me if its the inverter or the actual screen.
Hope you have notifications turned on, as i can't PM you.
