Hi, i'm a fellow from Singapore~ i notice that more Singapore-an posting here than MSI site.
i'm currently saving to get a new notebook, but when i filter down i left only this two Brand.
As most people know Singapore's notebook ain't cheap compare to US and EU. So i was only able to access some of the notebook from US unless i risk myself and get it from GentechPC, but if there a manufacture defect then i need to ship my notebook back and wait for couple of weeks.
In Singapore, the current company that selling Clevo chassis is Aftershock, and the model is Clevo P170SM and P150SM (Afaik)
For MSI, i think the only one i will go for is MSI GT70-2OD, with 780M and no SSD.
Now the problem is, Clevo got 2 Fan while MSI only have 1, maybe is not an issue as MSI Nstech fan can work like 2 fan but with terrible noise when Turbo Fan on (What i see from the display unit). Clevo i not very sure how the fan when it is full load.
And i'm curious about Killer Ethernet from MSI, that is something that Clevo chassis don't have. Most of my game is online, so latency is an issue for me. So far i don't have a solid information on how the Killer Ethernet work.my current notebook got LAN plugged in 24/7

As a whole, the MSI barebone is better than the Clevo's. Here is why:
- they might have only 1 fan, but its bigger and quieter
- sound system (speakers) are A LOT better, also the sound card is wired properly (we had issues with no bass on the Clevos with previous models)
- you have a turbo option on the fan natively on the MSI (some clevos lost that option, but it can be fixed with a custom BIOS from Prema, he makes awesome BIOSes. But using custom BIOS voids your warranty, so....your call.)
- cooling in both the MSI and Clevo is almost equal
Clevo is always a good option, if you can handle bad speakers and love upgrading a lot. Clevos have extra hard drive bays that MSI doesent have. And the price is better.
Any other questions? -

You can upgrade the GPU for a good portion of the gaming grade clevos.

Technically, you can upgrade the GPU in your HM clevo, but it takes a risky blind-flash of a 7970m with modded vBIOS.
People have successfully upgraded to 7970m and 680m on their HM series lappies, but its really not worth it IMHO.
It has something to do with the short life expectancy of the upgrade itself (next year we get 14nm CPUs) and a brand new GPU costs around 400-500$ which is too much.
And yea, Im hopeful for the next year, Broadwell should lift the performance bar reasonably and Maxwell for Nvidia could definetely mean some improvements also.
For now, skipping Haswell and this year's failed gpu lineups, Im keeping my Ivy Bridge powered laptop and enjoying Prema's BIOS mod, which unlocked Turbo Boost and the Fn+1 turbo fan speed for me.
Thanks prema! -
Technically, yes but its not something my or the big majority of resellers do. If its not "officially" supported by clevo they just say it cant be done, the 6990m wich was replaced by a new one after nearly 3 months of wait died in 1 WEEK! LOL, now i gotta wait again, and again they will end up refusing to do the upgrade for a 680m for example wich would be easy, cuz "its not possible" acording to them. So pissed i would just take the refund if it was an option and buy a desktop.
Thats why I'm going with MSI next time. Maybe Alienware if not that much more expensive.
Clevo or MSI?
