Hi folks,
Does anyone know of a Clevo or Sager supplier who does laptops with glossy screens please? Someone who would ship to the UK.
Yes, I know glossy screens are not popular, but to my eyes they look infinitely better than matte screens. So please don't start a holy war about screens and tell me I should get a matte screen.![]()
Many thanks![]()

Nice to know there are others out there who prefer the glossy. I keep getting told by retailers there's no call for it.

Some of the best screens I've seen were back on the P37xxM series and competing models; glossy, 94% NTSC (IIRC). Since their benefits to gaming are debatable, we don't see them much in enthusiast rigs anymore. :\

There is also a health implication to this and it's been a topic of discussion here in Germany, especially in a business enviroment but also outside the workplace. Eye strain is worse when you look at a reflective surface compared to a non-reflective, so it became a health argument for matte displays in the workplace and that's filtered to the panel manufacturers and laptop manufacturers/system builders.
There's also another simple explanation - though you guys have commented on your wish for glossy panels, the demand dwindled to the point where companies like Clevo simply didn't have demand from their system builder customers. From our specific case, the sales of glossy panels massively declined - when Clevo stops getting orders (or reduced volume orders) from companies like us then they see the trend and have to act accordingly. Remember that your Clevos, Quantas, Compals buy panels in the thousands at a time, not just individual boxes of 20. -
@XMG I very much doubt there's much/any veracity to the idea that glossy screens are bad for eyesight. We were told butter was bad for us for a while and we should eat margarine, now we're told butter is better. People don't know, they guess. I think if anything, for me, the matte screens are worse because they're so blurry in comparison and you end up squinting to see them. I never get this whole thing about glossy screens being hard to see, I just do not get it.
Apple still sell computers with glossy screens by the bucket load; I have little or no time for Apple, but they know that the screens looks stunning. I imagine their retina displays would be joke on matte versions.
As far as orders declining, it doesn't mean the demand's still not there. It's like vinyl; loads of us carried on buying it because we know it's better than digital - the demand fell, but it was still there (and is now happily climbing again). Like with vinyl, we'd pay more if needs be, for what we want. So often in life we're told what is best for us or what we should do for reasons of convenience.
Would rather pay an extra £100 a pop than put up with matte screens.
Fortunately some people still sell glossies, the main issue is you end up paying the Microsoft or Apple tax and they're not as otherwise customisable as buying from a smaller company. However, it'll just have to be the way to go.Last edited: Apr 18, 2018 -
