Recently my laptop started crashing and upon research found it was a problem with the video card (or so I thought at least). I used to be able to at least get to windows and use it for varying amounts of time before it would crash and the laptop would beep loudly. I had recently bought a fairly powerful desktop so decided I would just downgrade from my current 485m to a 560m.

I purchased the card and and installed it, however now I see nothing on the screen. The laptop seems to start correctly as I can see it attached to my home-group and I can transfer and access files from there but just nothing on the screen. I have tried plugging in an external monitor through both the DVI and HDMI ports but still nothing.

I have read a number of different things, mainly on this site that have left me a little lost and was wondering if anyone had any advice on how or if the issue is even solvable.

Bought it from here, to be fair with little research on compatibility New Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M 1.5G GDDR5 Video Card N12E | eBay

I'm not sure what brand it is, should it say on the card or from a part number?

I google what the chip number was (N12E-GS-A1) and Asus showed up in a number of results so that'd be my best guess.

If that's the case, it's probably a compatibility issue.

You will most likely need to flash the VBIOS. Ask the seller to provide a Clevo one, or search the internet. As you can not have 2 GPUs in your notebook, you will have to blindflash, too. Honestly I would not recommend that as its risky. You could always ask a reseller to flash it for you, though.

I would expect your model to need a Clevo GTX 460M.

Hmm damn not really what I wanted to hear, is it weird that windows still starts up and I can see it on the network or is that a usual symptom with this kind of thing?

Also when I got my desktop I began to ignore my laptop (seeing as it was broken) however I remember at least being able to get to bios splash screen (with press f12 to get to boot menu etc..) and then it would more or less immediately crash when it tried to load windows login, maybe getting a few minutes of use. However I turned it on before I installed the new card and was getting a black screen (no splash screen) exactly similar to the problem I have now, is there any chance that there is another issue? I have re-installed the original card and still get the black screen.

I'd say the others are going to be correct in what they've suggested so far.See if you can get the GPU reflashed and should take care of it. If that fails to work, that could lead into more troubleshooting steps. Could also just RMA the unit in full since it doesn't sound like you rely on it day to day, not working anyways, that way the problems can all be sorted out and fixed for you.

Yeah, if the system boots the OS, no display doesn't mean it's not functioning in most or all other respects. There is a fair possibility that it's the board and not the card, so your speculation is fair too.

I think the vbios is more specific than just buying any card and trying it....

this card may require a different vbios for the P1*0EM, and P1*0HM models, or I might be thinking of something else...... (gpu switching related on GT*6** and HD 7**0 cards maybe.......)
