So currently I'm running the Clevo p170sm with a 780m. I'm looking at the 980m as a possible upgrade. I've talked to both xoticpc and RJtech about getting a 980m and the possibility of upgrading with the p170sm. So far both have given me negative responses due to changes from the p170sm to the p170sm-a.

I've done a bit of digging into this matter and have found that there are unofficial bios's out there that I could acquire and possibly upgrade to the 980m with that, namely with Prema's mod. Me being fairly new to these kinds of things I was hoping to reach the community for some advice on whether I can safely and successfully upgrade with Prema's bios and whether there are any physical hardware changes from the 780m to the 980m or the p170sm and the p170sm-a that would make pursuing this upgrade unsafe for the stability of my machine.

    Thanks for reading!

prema is widely known in the community and even has his own partner shop (mythlogic) who sell their machines with prema mod under warranty, so from that side ure safe. for details on flashing u should go check out his website http://biosmods.wordpress.com/ as far as i know its pretty much an addition to the bios for recognizing the 980m properly so its basically all about software, not hardware. im sure that prema can chime in with more detail, if necessary, though :)

Prema said SM users can upgrade to 980M/970M without any BIOS mod (but said some extra features required modded BIOS and he's working on it)

I believe that is SM-A users, not SM users.

If i'm not mistaken he said cards are working with both system but additional features require BIOS mod.

That's interesting; as far as I know SM needs a BIOS update to get 800M series, and thus SM should need a BIOS update to get 900M series. But I admit I could indeed be wrong. I know for sure the SM-A series is fine; Tirenz just made a thread that he upgraded from the 870M to the 980M in his P177SM-A and it was basically plug and play.

The 980m has been plug and play in a lot of systems which is a refreshing change.

Well as long as it's plug and play with the p170sm or at least good to go with a bios mod. I'm ready to hop on board for one. :)

You can do it with no problems, I have installed a couple of days ago in my P170SM the 970M GTX ( awesome card by the way :D)

As jaybee83 and D2 Ultima said, you only need to flash the latest Premamod, and once you get the driver from the nvidia website , you HAVE to modify the "nvcvi.inf" file in the drivers folder, otherwise you won't be able to install the drivers.

Also, if you have windows 8, you HAVE to install them with the "enforcement signature" disable on boot.

Prema told me with the next BIOS update we wont' need to mod the "nvcvi.inf" anymore. :)

    Here my card screenshot:

Hope you dont mind me asking...which Prema Mod bios did you flash with?

    I also have a P170SM with a 780m, which I want to upgrade to a 980m.

What he hasn't released is a BIOS mod that prevents the need for a modded .inf to install drivers

That is more tricky but if you can install a notebook gpu you can use an inf ;)

Hey all, first time poster here and need a bit of help regarding this topic.

I can follow good instructions but need some clarification. I have just installed a 980m but my latop won't see it and I want to get hold of the correct bios from premamod. Thing is, my motherboard says P17SM (so not P170SM) is that correct and also, does that mean it is not the P170SM-A?

Sorry to come across as thick as I want to make sure I get the correct bios. I upgraded from a 780m so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle.

    Thanks in advance all.

You need modified inf file. Otherwise windows not recognise your card. Prema still not released his modified bios. Until then you need to mod your inf file.

You will also need to disable driver signing on windows to install it.

I am pretty sure yours its the P170SM, otherwise you would have the nvidia GPU 8XX series in it.

Often the bios is shared between all p17x systems so the bios is just called p17.

There are different variants of the P17X but all use the same motherboard so the markings say P17SM since the last number is not important.

The -A depends on when you got it as it is a motherboard revision effectively. If you bought it as a -A it should obviously be.

No that's only for that specific driver.
