I really want the p870dm (either Sager or Eurocom). That said, I also really want a 120hz monitor on my laptop. I play competitive CS:GO (that is the primary, but not sole, reason for buying the machine). I have a great desktop, but travel a lot, so the external monitor bit doesn't really work here.
I know that i can get an x8 Extreme from Eurocom today (p377sm-a), which ships w/ 120hz monitor. It also, though, is a mobile haswell CPU (vs. desktop Skylake). Looking through these and other forums, it looks like people were initially optimistic about a 120hz mod for the p870dm but I haven't seen any progress on that front.
Wondering if people here think A) a 120hz mod for p870dm will come (i.e., 3rd party purchase of 120hz laptop monitor), B) if not, how much I could overclock the p870dm refresh rate? and C) if not, how much worse is the p377sm-a from a performance standpoint?
Thanks!

I'd probably suggest the P377SM-A if a 120 Hz screen is that important to you, that's what I have, I'm pretty sure that PxxDM laptops won't be getting any 120 Hz screens any time soon if ever.

a) why not, it is edp connectic so it might work but need to be tested to see bios compatibility.
b) As it is a g-sync i think im not sure refresh is 75Hz. But as example, my friend has a p375sm same screen max 80Hz, Mine on p377sma same screen was 100Hz and more. So it depends on each screen.
c) Gpu performance is good, with gtx980m or sli should be the same.. But one gtx980 give +- 16k points from eurocom test. Maybe some mod will appear to fit this gpu in p377sma. The main difference is with cpu, but i think it is mainly only noticeable on benchmark. i7 haswel still perfect for gaming. My i7 4900qm is not even in turbo mode and i keept it at max 2.8ghz with 4 core, no virtual active so temp are cool. -

It needs a 50 pin eDP connector.

but this laptop isn't it a 50pin edp too?

Maybe we can just replace it by our 50pin cable, if we are lucky, it still the same connector on display.

Even if you could replace the cable with the correct one, it's quite likely that the 120 Hz screen wouldn't fit in the P870DM as I'm pretty sure it uses ultrathin eDP panels.

Right, a lot of models are using the thinner panels now. The panels that were used a couple years ago aren't really compatible with newer models now for that reason (and pin connectors as well).

Something is weird, My lvds cable is 50pin so i guess as mine edp connector is smaller, i guess it is 30pin connection no? New screen has less pin but maybe connectic to motherboard is still equal, i would like to see how it look this new edp cable..

Rather than connector sizes have you counted pins?
-
50pin out from my 120Hz & 40 pin out from 60Hz screen
but 15x2 pin for edp & 20x2 for LVDS connectic ( picture )Attached Files:

if we look after the edp from p37xsma, there arent 40pin connection but display port is 40pin. and both edp connectic on motherboard is 30pin. So it might be possible.
Those displays are available in china. -

Just some little mod if you are right
but the main issue is to know if it is compatible. Next year i will try to connect a 4k in my 377sma.
