Hello guys, just got my beast... love it so far. is a 6700k and dual 980m sli. for some reason GPU 1 is overheating like crazy... even on idle without any games is getting about 85 c. if I try to bench then it gets sper hot nearing 100c if I set the fans to full blast then it stays around 70c almost like the gpu 1 fan does not work unless I set the fans manually to full blast... any help?

Check the aluminum foil looking thing on the bottom plate. One of the fans is blocked by that

Also open up the bottom and check if the heatsink screws are secured they might be lose.

congrats on the laptop you will love having 980m SLI, if you ever need help or have any problems with your SLI shoot me a message and I will help you out, I have gotten all the games I play to run in SLI sometimes even in cases where it isn't officially supported HAVE FUN! What danyune said makes sense if there is something lightly pushing on one of the fan blades at slower speeds it may be keeping the fan from spinning up properly but when you turn fans on high it then has that extra juice to push through/past whatever is touching the fan blade

Thanks guys for the fast response! well, I'm happy but at the same time little worry... I turned on the laptop and ran some benchmarks and the temp problem is gone, but I didn't do anything to fix it at all.... so going to monitor it well and see where it goes. I have another question for you, I'm loving the sound of these beast I came from an m18x r2, not bad sound but this one completely blows it out of the water. I notice small distortion when you raise up the volume or lower it, and also when you are playing with the sound blaster software a little bit.. not mayor but there is some distortion as ur pressing the different keys and stuff. have u guys experience this? if ur not messing with that software then sound is clean and crisp.
also take a look at my benchie... not too bad for a nooob like meAttached Files:

Maybe you had something blocking the vent without realising? Glad it's working well for you. You can try updating the sound drivers for your audio oddities.

However, I disagree in that this is the only reason why you're seeing high temps with the P870DM / i6700K. If the repaste did not help, you have two options to check next.
First , if you purchased from a Prema-Mod partner, check with them and get a Prema BIOS/EC installed for the laptop. If not, you'll want to take a look at installing unclewebb's ThrottleStop or intel XTU. In either case, try undervolting the i6700K, as the Clevo P870DM stock has the voltage a little too high; thus resulting in higher CPU temps. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/p870dm-g-temperatures-is-this-normal.789724/ for more details.
Next, if undervolting is not the solution, something else could be going on, and you may want to contact your reseller about a possible RMA situation. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/cpu-hits-99c-and-throttles-when-running-division.789249/ for info regarding that scenario.

Nice! I didn't realize Unclewebb's ThrottleStop could change voltages. So, yeah, @Juang1985, take a look at any reputable utility which can change the CPU voltage.
-
Paste and pads.
Under volt, change the fan profile if you can to change when they kick in at..
But if none help contact seller for rma and hope that it is a defective part or chip.
So what about driver??
Did you try another driver for the gpu..
It's odd that its getting that got that fast..

Doh!! Just noticed the OP mentioned GPU and not CPU! While the undervolting may help, it was not what I had in mind regarding my other posts - was thinking CPU. While the other stuff is still good advice, it probably doesn't apply to your case. Sorry.
-
In fairness reducing temps anywhere reduces the total thermal load which is all good.

Less so when they are not thermally linked however but fair enough advice for the cpu

Thanks for the help guys. The problem is not my CPU is one of my gpus... the slave gpu gets really hot. is the closes gpu to the cpu. that im having problems with.
-
I actually got a laptop replacement and is behaving the exact same way. does anyone here has a dual 980m sli? that can run heaven mark for 15-20 minutes and tell me his temps?
-
Hmm... I wonder... http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...771dm-p775dm-thermal-paste-replacement.789825
The last part of the thread regarding the other GPU and Al foil is important too. -

yes, exactly same thing i had with the slave GPU. read the "guide" i have made that have been posted above.
if you are going to repaste and re-pad... when you disassable the heatsinks, could you please make photos of your you GPU die and Heatsink, i want to see how the factoty thermal paste leftovers looks on it, please. -
