Clevo screens - 144hz FHD IPS or 120hz QHD TN?

Hello guys, after looking at numerous reviews I've decided on a Clevo. The only thing that's bugging me is the screen choice.

Do you think the extra pixels on QHD are worth it for gaming? I'm assuming the image quality will be worse than the IPS panel. Less refresh rate also doesn't seem that good. However the QHD display panel itself is more expensive... As far as response times go, I'm not quite sure. So do you think it's worth it or not?

 

If choosing between those two panels only, I would go with the 144Hz IPS panel.

It's a newer panel, should be of better quality than the QHD panel and has a slightly higher refresh rate.

You won't have to deal with any scaling issues either since 1080p fits perfect for 15 or 17" screens. I think some people here are running 125% or 150% with their QHD displays.

Response times are 9ms for the 144hz and 5ms for the QHD. If you are getting the QHD, I would opt for the one without the banding issue. It was annoying when I had it.

 

Hmmm.. I guess I should really go with the FHD panel then.

I've heard there are 3ms response time IPS panels though? I think ASUS claims theirs are.. At the very least their GM501 seems to truly have the 3ms panel. I was thinking about having that panel on a Clevo. Is it possible?

And the 17.3 model, they also have a new panel but I haven't seen the response times measured on it anywhere yet. The GL703GS model comes equipped with a AU Optronics AUO329D (B173HAN03.2) screen, which is supposedly a newer version than the one used on their ROG G703, the B173HAN03.0 which measured fairly well too.

However I've heard a lot of bad stuff about the ASUS laptops which is why I decided to go with a Clevo after careful consideration. I was thinking if it is possible to get that display panel on a Clevo?

 

I'm assuming it got to have some sort of PWM, which I really try to stay away of.

 

No, the QHD panel is AUO B173QTN01.4 - The same one that Aorus uses. It doesn't use PWM.

Neither does the FHD 144hz panel.

However it's interesting to see that the 5ms response time is only somewhat true for the black to white( 4, 2 ) which is usually said as 3-4ms response time. The Grey-to-Grey response time is actually (14, 10) ms, so ~12ms.

I've got an FHD and QHD display side by side at home right now. As far as image quality the QHD is nicer for viewing static images and when I'm doing anything with Adobe, but when I'm actually playing games it makes less difference and I'd go refresh over resolution for gaming any day.

 

On a 17.3" I like the extra space you can get, in games I do appreciate the extra detail but it depends what your eyes are sensitive to.

 

I am using a 1080p screen (see my signature) and it works well for gaming. The 144 Hz is nice and I cap my games at 100-120 Hz for the Gsync effect. For Adobe works, I use my external monitors

 

Hey man. The optimal G-Sync setup for 144Hz is G-Sync+VSync On in Nvidia Control Panel, and limit games to 141 FPS.

 

Recently got one of the new PA71ES-Gs from HID with the 17" 144hz IPS (AUO319D - B173HAN3.1). The colors are relatively good considering it's NTSC rating, and the FHD is a great fit. Though in hindsight I should've paid for backlight bleed testing rather than color calibration, as there is an unsightly bleed on top left and bottom left, and the color was pretty accurate after an OS reinstall sans ICC profile. Something to keep in mind if and when u purchase.

Curious to know how severe the bleed is on anybody else's Clevo IPS

AUO B173HAN03.2 [AUO329D] seems to have SERIOUS inverse ghosting issue

 

That's the 3.2 though, not the 3.1.
