no firewire is a deal breaker for me
-
In the past, the IdeaPad Y-series have always been gimped by the lack of higher-than-1366x768 displays. If Full HD screens make it to both Y-series models, they'll be very attractive models that are well-priced.
Expect to see FireWire in fewer and fewer laptops. USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt are both far faster and will be the new standard, and besides, many media devices even used USB 2.0 over FireWire. Even the traditionalist Thinkpads have already dropped FireWire support. -
The new Ideapad y580 is FULL HD. Looks good.
-
This was interesting to see. I'm not a fan of Ideapads at all though. I love my Thinkpad x220, but the similar e220 Ideapad feels cheap and isn't great overall. If they offered the same specs in a Thinkpad with a 1080p screen, I'd definitely reconsider though.

Sager/Clevo went full HD on 15.6" notebooks ages ago.
Lenovo is still using 1366x768 on the y570 that sucks. -
Hang on, have I missed a Clevo announcement in regards to the next P150?
-
I don't think the Y580 will handle the GTX660m heat well. Look at the chassis.. Single heatsink for GTX660m/Ivy Bridge. Will fail
-
660M is supposed to be more powerful than GTX 580M, correct? For $899?!
-
Looks like Lenovo is getting ready to tangle with the big boys.
-
any update from clevo and sager from CES?
seems that many companies have released product information through CES but i've not seen any yet for clevo and sager.. -
Serious? I thought the 580/6990 successors weren't coming out till Q2 - 3 at the earliest? My understanding was the 660 was the 560 replacement.
-
gtx 660m will definately beat gtx 570m and even 6990m if slightly oced but there might be variants of 660m like gt 555m
-
Yes approximately, the 660 is not to be a 560 replacement, but can be considered as one.
And no the 660 isn't even close to be a 580 killer! Do correct me if I am wrong, this is just plain weird talking, no official accurate information about the nVidia line has been released, so I'm personally talking off record. -
Hmmm, maybe the 570, but I doubt it will beat the 6990. I'll reserve my judgement till I've seen some benchmarks.
-
The 660M may be one of the two unnamed nVIDIA GPU's on the right:
-
If we are sure Y580's GTX660M is of 2GB vram, then I know it sucks.
It must be 2GB 128bit DDR3, a severely castrated version.
Remember W520 uses Quadro 2000M(GF106c core) with 2GB 128bit DDR3. -
That Y580 is just up my alley. I'm not sure what my plans are for when Ivy Bridge releases. Desktop, Laptop, if laptop what brand. I already bought a keyboard, mouse, and monitor so a desktop transition is easy but I am hurting for a new laptop, plus I can do what I'm doing right now, just dock the laptop.

More like the big boy Lenovo is going to tangle with the same fries (Lenovo is massive compared to anyone other then HP and Dell).
