Hi folks. I recently built a barebone w110er with i7 3820qm processor in it.
However, the laptop was making a audible static noise so I shipped it back to the people I bought it from for a check up.
I got a email from the them today telling me using a processor more powerful then i7 3630qm is not recommended for w110er and further use of the current cpu will void their warranty.
Is this information accurate? I mean the laptop worked fine except for that static noise...

if thats the 11" beauty then the fastest i7 ive seen is the new 3632qm and i can totally understand your supplier.

It may be more of a thermal concern on their end than a compatibility issue. Although the TDP is the same, the higher clocks will consistently generate a little more heat. Probably, they just don't want to be liable for any accidental damage.

When I run it the temp was stable at around 55~60c idle and was reaching over 80~90c when being pushed.
But I don't want to damage the laptop I guess. Sigh...back to ebay to look for 3630qm then.

I'm not sure whats wrong with your system but it won't be the processor. I've sold many W110er with 3820 and there hasn't been a problem. Realistically the power draw over the 3630 is minimal. Check your drivers, check your ram, get a bigger psu. Theres nothing wrong with that processor in that chassis.

I would suggest the 3720QM, you can Overclock it by an extra 4 multis with my BIOS mod, which should optimize the price, performance & thermal efficiency... ;)

I agree with prema, the extra 100mhz and 2MB of cache is not worth it especially considering the GPU.

The best ram for tweakers is the 30nm samsung, for general 1866mhz ram will do.
