Hi, today I received my new Crucial M4 128gb, i installed it in the 1st HDD bay and then I moved the WDB 500gb to the 2nd bay.

A few minutes ago I noticed that the temps of the WD were around 60-65º in idle, but when I play and the fan turns on, the temps drops 50º.

    I should be worried?

I don't have optical drive, so i can put it in the 3rd slot.

Sorry for my bad english :(

wow, those temps are alarmingly high for an HDD! it should definitely stay below 50°C, if not below 40°C for prolonged periods of time! otherwise ull drastically shorten its life span.

did u have those kinda temps before, when it was in the main HDD bay? also, have u run and checked tools like crystaldiskmark? do they show any particular errors or "off" values for any of the S.M.A.R.T. attributes?

    cheers

In the main bay temps doesn't exceed 50º, now i connected this hdd in the 3rd bay and temps are about 37º.

I tried with another HDD in the 2nd bay and now it's at 67º

It could be just the sensor or software, which program are you using for temps. The temps seem too high to be accurate especially for a SSD.

    Aida64 and CrystalDiskMark,

SSD is fine, in the fist bay. The problem comes when I put any hard drive in the second bay.

Maybe i could try to put the ssd in the second bay and the others 2 hdd in 1 and 3 bay

I can confirm, on my w370et, temps in the 2-nd bay (near the CPU heatsink) it gets hot down there.
    Im reading 61'C right now.

Im gonna move my HDD to my empty HDD caddy slot, first thing when I come home.
Then im gonna monitor the temps...

Breakthrough! I moved the HDD into the caddy slot :D
Now, the temps currently are 24'C in the hard drive!!!
This is more than 2x less than what I got 3 hours ago, with the 61'C readings in the secondary slot!

I found the reason for this terrible heat. 2 reasons actually:
1.) the PCH is right under the secondary HDD slot, lol :D its like putting your hard drive on a hot-plate xD
2.) the CPU heatsink is also too close (we are talking about the hottest part of it, mainly the upper plating over the CPU)

Not even with a dedicated HDD fan will you be able to lower the temps there enough, in order to save your HDD from frying slowly over time.
Well, I solved the problem by moving it to my HDD caddy (lucky that I didnt buy a second HDD, so my caddy was free, lol!)
Now my HDD is safe and sound, no terrible meltdown anymore in sight. ;)

What i figured, i moved the 2nd HDD to the 3rd sata slot (i didn't bought an optical drive) and now the HDD and the laptop are much more cooler than yesterday.
I don't know how they came to put the pch under the secondary HDD slot, that was a terrible decision lol.

Thanks to all for the responses, at least now i know that aren't problem of my laptop

Interesting. Glad to know the third SATA came in handy with your setup.
