Got plenty of cash burning a hole in my pocket but it's been a week since I haven't heard back from Eurocom and a chat yesterday with Mythlogic has them selling them hopefully next week...
-
Well next week has arrived and Mythlogic and Eurocom are still not selling them yet... Guess it will be next week or kiss that "May release" goodbye.
-
Eurocom is shady when it comes to buying newly released parts, there's a high chance they'll either give you delays or an ES card. Definitely go with Mythlogic. Also, Mythlogic will probably have some spare ones on the 24th, the first shipment is all for killing backlog.
-
Still a no-go from Mythlogic this morning. Didn't even have to ask the question in the chat, they just started it off with "still no word on the 7970m"
Also no word back from Eurocom from my purchase request sent in. -
Looks like I am crazy. According to Eurocom the card is not compatible with the w860CU due to BIOS (vBIOS?) issues. Since an update is unlikely it looks like I will be stuck with a lesser upgrade or just tough it out untill a new laptop is justified

Yeah man, I urge you to try it so no one else does, I guess people don't believe retailers around here when they say it WONT WORK.
You might want to try RJtech. -
Eurocom has no reason to be dishonest. If they could sell it in good faith I'm sure they would!
-

Well, I'm all for BIOS mods, who knows what will happen one day... just hope its not too late for it to be worth it.
-
word. while getting my refund on the 7970M i asked Dan from eurocom how probable it is that the 7970M is gonna STAY incompatible with the HM series. his answer to that:
"We’re exploring many avenues to get the HM laptops working with the 7970Ms. We’ll notify you if we do."
lets see how that turns out. -

Man, eurocom is actually really really cool, have you ever heard of any other reseller doing something like that? They also mod heatsinks and stuff.
Maybe its unlawful, well who cares. -
What's with Eurocom's bad rep here anyway? Something I missed?
-
single-case lemons being blown outta proportion, rumors stated as facts, childish impatience and a shot of drama-queen style
welcome to NBR
-
I had to call them on it and to their credit they did price match it.
-
Well, put in an order for a 6990m from RJTech. Hopefully my current heatsink will work with it.
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
Er, you'll have to modify it you know (the heatsink).

about the qualities of eurocom, i've been dealing with them for the 7970m launch
And, It's clearly not eurocom fault.... at least the peaple we were dealing with... that's was not their choice to report delevery for those cards
Me too, I've pre-ordered the 7970m for my g73jh, and finally got one from dell (got just to get it after the WE at the postal office), and they where very commercial with me for a new purchase about a nude w860cu, and being very arranging about this purchase...
I think not many company would act like they do with their customers, and I'm very pleased with them... -

Nope not crazy at all. Chances are great it will work
-
aggie: You might want to ask Eurocom which version of the w860cu they tested it. It seems like the 7970m won't work in the HM's as a result of nvidias 3d tech, which some versions of the w860cu also shipped with.
Might be worthwhile to see if the 7970m works with a pre usb 3.0 mobo-. -
True, I suppose their are mult versions. But seeing as mine is the original version (usb 2.0) that came out in Oct of 09 I won't hold my breath for it being compatible.
-

I think the chances are fair it will. The 6970M and 6990M worked in my pre usb 3.0 w860cu.
Also the M15x is pre usb 3.0 and it works too. Someone must try it out
Imagine the feelings those HM user will have when they see the older model is better lol -
ill tell u my feelings.... KILL!!!!
but first lets wait and see whats up with bios tweaks@7970M and the 680M in general

Well, a sad end to this quest (for now). Installed my 6990m tonight and only required a mild bit of work on the old 280m heatsink. Had some quality thermal pads and some old Artic Silver 5 and it seems to be doing alright. Do get the power issues after a bit of BF3 though, the new power supply is already in the mail.
-
Well, we are sorry to hear that you only upgraded to the 6990M.
Could you post some pics of the mods you have done to it so others can see it?
Let us all know how the power supply works out! -
So I decided to go ahead and got a p150em shell with cpu and video card, going to swap everything else over. But I will first give the 7970m a try in the old w860cu to see what happens
It should be showing up next week or two. Will keep ya posted. -
uh nice, id be very interested to hear if it works or not
there could be some trouble regarding the fact that the stock 7970M Clevo vBios absolutely needs to detect an IGP present in the machine in order to POST, but im always open for pleasant surprises!

If Aggie can make it work, without hiccups, I'm in!

hello jaug1337 eurocom have tested the 7970m in the Clevo W880CU W870CU IT WORKS
Thay say that the W860CU "requires complex heat modifications" -
u mean heatsink modifications?
well if thats really true, that would be awesome! great to see an "oldtimer" get new life, makes hope for another potential gpu upgrade down the road for my machine as well hehe
cheers -
If they will sell the 7970M on eBay then I AM ON, modified ofc, I am not up for cutting through it again -
AMD Radeon HD 7970M 2GB FOR CLEVO | eBay
the 6970m & 6990m heat sink do need slight trim to fit flush but it only took 15 mins to fit.
eurocom will also sell them with the modded vbios (i have asked) and can also previde a modded heatsink to fit the 7970m.
i went for the mythlogiccorp one tho as its a bargin price. -
you be glad to know that its now confermed. no mabys fully compatable and in the w880cu its running on ice very cool idel 44'c and 56 when gaming
-
I will definitely consider this then.. did you mod the heatsink yourself by cutting it? what is exactly to be modded/fitted?
I live in EU so eurocom seems to be my option ^^
edit: my 6970M heat sink is trimmed already and fits perfectly inside my W860CU, think I'll be able to shiv the Clevo 7970M for the P150HM/P170HM inside? Or should I go for the X7200 7970M? -
Good news everyone! Got a good email from upgradeyourlaptop from eBay.

Spoke a long time with Eurocom and after several tests, we came to the conclusion that the 7970M doesn't work in the W860CU
The 680M and 7970M DOES work in the W880CU though, so you guys with the larger older generation laptops.. you can upgrade -
if i was you, i would keep the 6970m heatsink and just mod it to fit the 7970m its very easy to do just wate untill you get your 7970m and trim the 6970m heatsink .. or if you realy dont wont to do it yourself then contact eurocom and ask them if thay can price match mythlogiccorp 7970m and includ the moded heatsink for your clevo. o
also ask mythlogiccorp if thay might mod a heatsink for you. no harn in asking.
eurocom is in the usa and so is mythlogiccorp. -
did thay say why it wouldnt work??? heat should not be a problem as the 7970m runs way cooler than the 6970m or 6990m and if its a bios issue then flash the w880cu bios to your clevo w860cu
-
i read some were on the foram the some1 flashed the w880cu to there w860cu and it worked
-
-
Hey all, I just made an account on this forum to tell you guys that I talked to Eurocom and they said they tested a W860CU with a 7970m once, and the laptop shut down after a few minutes every time they tried to power it on. They said they never conclusively determined the cause, and that they just tell people that it's a heat issue:
So I ordered a 7970m for my W860CU and will try to install it next weekend. If I remember, I'll post a follow-up with how it went.
Has anyone else tried putting a 7970m in their W860CU?Bester likes this. -

Battlefield 3 on Ultra, 1920x1080
Temperatures after driving around the map for a few minutes. The temperature approaches just 65 degrees. Again, this was running Battlefield 3 on Ultra at 1080p. So unlike what Eurocom told me, the W860CU with a properly modified heatsink is more than capable of cooling the 7970M.
The only two things I had to do were
- Modify the heatsink
- Flash the VBIOS
I was replacing a 6970M, and fortunately the 6970M and the 7970M are very similar physically, so the heatsink didn't have to be cut very much. I had to cut slots for a few additional components that the 7970M had. To do this, I used a CNC machine, but this is definitely overkill. A Dremel tool would suffice.
To flash the VBIOS, I just followed these instructions. It was super simple.
After that, it just booted up. No problems at all!
-
^^ Awesome job mate!

that is super awesome! balls of steel paid off!
enjoy ur new beastly system buddy!
btw: LOL@using a CNC machine to modify the heatsink! that definitely has style! hahaha
