    Interesting.

Is 4 the same number of lanes that went to the first m.2 slot from the chipset on the old machine?

What would running a main nvme drive in the first m.2 slot connected directly to the CPU mean performance wise compared to running it on the m.2 slot connected to the chipset?

What does 11th gen refer to?
    Chipset?
    CPU generation?

Does that mean I5, I7, and I9 are 11th gen on the KM-G compared to 10th gen on the SM-G?

    Thanks.

11th gen refers to CPU generation. The KM-G will work with any 10th gen or 11th gen CPUs, and I think the SM-G only works with 10th gen CPUs with the stock firmware.

I see. So the full lineup of intel CPU's is 11th gen now. And SM-G was designed for 10th gen cpu's.

On a KM-G, can a nvme primary drive on be run on the 1st m.2 slot that runs directly to the cpu?

Or is that for the video card?

Yes it has a slot that only works at all with 11th gen CPUs.

So the KM-G has one more M.2 slot than the SM-G?

I thought that the SM-G already had an NVME only M.2 slot that connected directly to the 10th gen CPU.

Both have 4 m.2 slots, but the 1st one on the KM-G only works if you have an 11th gen CPU installed.

Ok, but the SM-G 1st M.2 slot also connects directly to the cpu and works with that configuration with the 10th gen cpu correct?

On the SM-G, yes the 1st M.2 slot works with a 10th gen CPU installed. However, it will be limited to 2 PCIe lanes, so the would be no reason to install an NVME drive in that slot. You're limited to the SATA interface.

Ok so are you saying that there is no nvme m.2 slot on the SM-G that connects directly to the cpu with 4 lanes, that runs with the 10th gen cpu?

So the direct NVME m.2 to cpu connection is exclusive to the KM-G with an 11th gen cpu?

    Indeed.

The 3 M.2 slots on the SM-G that support the NVME interface are controlled by the chipset. The direct NVME M.2 connection to the CPU is present only on the KM-G, and only works when an 11th gen CPU is installed. If you install a 10th gen CPU in the KM-G, then that slot will not work at all.

    Got it.

There are no M.2 slots connected directly to the cpu on the SM-G, they all go through the chipset.

Is there a performance improvement when running an NVME drive connected directly to the 11th gen cpu in a KM-G vs the chipset route on the SM-G?

    The 10th gen only has 20x PCI-E lanes (16 GPU and 4 chipset). The 11th gen has 24x PCI lanes. (16 GPU, 4x m.2 and 4 Chipset)

CPU connected lanes will have somewhat quicker I/o and won't impact the bandwidth available to the chipset devices.

Indeed and it is one of the reasons why I might not have gotten a Ryzen based modular Clevo even if it was available. I want my 10G network and the other connectivity that comes with Thunderbolt and so far there is no Ryzen based laptop that offers a Thunderbolt port.

How do you input 10G internet / ethernet into your laptop through a thunderbolt port?

Does the USB Type C thunderbolt port on the x170 have a 10G network controller ?

    That is interesting to learn.

The thunderbolt 3 port on the X170 is not full spec correct?

    It is 20gbps, not 40gbps?

I confirmed this with a reseller when I was shopping around, but can't recall which one now. I am not sure if TB3 half spec applies to the KM-G also or not though.

    https://linustechtips.com/topic/1273216-clevo-x170sm-g-eluktronics-thicc-17-initial-review/

And in the USB specs here:

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Clevo...ke-S-10-core-desktop-grade-CPUs.453755.0.html

The Thunderbolt 3 connection can be connected to the motherboard by either x2 or x4 PCIe lanes. The x2 TB3 port is half the speed of the x4 TB3 connection, or 20gbps vs 40gbps.

Hmmm the service manual for the X170SM shows 4 lanes of PCIe from PCH to TB Controller. Did they bench the port for bandwidth in the review? I could not find it.

I haven't seen a bench test on the thunderbolt port. I was referring to the X170 factory specs on the Thunderbolt 3 port.

For example: the X170 laptops will integrate support for USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 ports with 20 Gbps total bandwidth.

    Isn't the Thunderbolt port on the X170 SM-G also a USB type C 3.2 gen 2 port?

And isn't the usb type c Gen 3.2 spec:
    2x1 = 10gbps
    2x2 = 20gbps

    Doesn't 20gbps = half of thunderbolt 3 full spec of 40gbps?

Only 10Gbps for USB speeds via the TB3 port.

The 20Gbps Gen2x2 port is only on the right side, closest to the front. It is driven by an ASMedia ASM3242 supplementary controller. Every other USB port (including TB3) is driven by the Z490 PCH which only supports USB Gen2x1 (10Gbps) max.

This is part of one of the advantages the X170KM has, Z590 natively supports three USB Gen2x2 ports, so much less limitations on what ports can do, and no need for the ASMedia USB controller.

I confirmed with Hidevolution that the thunderbolt 3 ports on the X170KM-G are half spec. 2 PCIe lanes, and each lane is 10gbps.

"The X170KM supports USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 and the Thunderbolt 3 ports use 2 PCIe lanes."

It will be possible if Clevo makes another revision of this chassis with a Z690 motherboard. It should be a simple motherboard + CPU swap.

We'll have to see what happens first, but judging from their past DTR chassis, they'll probably make 2 more revisions before developing an entirely new chassis. This is not a guarantee though, so don't be disappointed if they come up with an entirely new chassis for Alder Lake.
