I've had this laptop since August 2008. Just today I was browsing the internet and my computer froze up and crashed. When it rebooted, my video card wasn't working and now my screen is very dark. I tried uninstalling the video card from the Device Manager and reinstalling it with the latest mobile Nvidia drivers and it's still not working. I really hope it's not fried... If anyone has any solutions it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    hi
firstly did you take out the extended warranty? if so contact your suppliers technical help for advise.
if not then a google search brings up quite a few suggestions which would be worth having a read through.

I didn't take out the extended warranty. I've contacted XoticPC and they said that it will be $715 plus the cost of shipping for a new GPU. There's also not that many solutions when it comes to this problem. The only one I've read is that you should try uninstalling and reinstalling the video card, which I've tried, and it didn't work. Some good news though, my screen has returned to its normal brightness and is no longer a pain to look at.

I was wondering if you ever got this resolved. I too just started having the same problem, and I too have a Sager NP5796 purchased from XOTICPC around August 2008.

The price for GPU replacement seems high. There have been some other posts where people are baking the GPU for 5 minutes. Not sure on those either, but issue definitely seems to be with the Nvidia 9800M GT

we had 2 people use the baking method on here last week and it worked for both of them but this is a last resort for a dead card.
they are really silly prices for the 9800GT and sadly due to the age of the laptop you have no other choice. the 260 card was the replacement for the 9800 but i think the laptops had a modification so they coud fit in.
mine is 2 years 4 months old now so im hating seeing more and more posts about failing cards but at least i took out the extra warranty.

the 5796 can take a GTX260M or 280M as long as you update the bios first and get the upgrade kit (GPU + beefier heatsink)

But make absolutely sure you get the MXM 2.1 version.

You can get the card/help/instructions here, and apparently it works ok with the standard heatsink as well...
