Just a reminder at this point, should you get a hex core working in your machine it would place a far greater stress on your power delivery, be careful.

I think if I'm reading correctly this guy measured VRM output with hardware tools and measured only 75W with i5-8600K going full bore at... something

I am waiting for the I5 8600K at least. Since the I7 8700K might have cooling issues. I am not looking to overclock, but could use those cores though

some what I'm reading is that i7-8700k full bore at 4+GHZ would fry the board, but something like a i5 8400 would be fine? Cool

I would prefer the I5 8600K if at all possible
since the voltage is i believe equal to the 6700K and 7700K... @Mr. Fox

4.3Ghz on 6 cores is stock for 8700K. But, no need to stop there. The limitations are thermal management capacity more so than motherboard power handling capacity.

Here are some recent benchmarks with my P870DM-G running the 8700K at 5.0GHz.

With the correct firmware and CPU mods it will. @Prema and @bloodhawk are running 8700K in their P870DM3s. IMHO, the P870DM3 is a better product than the P870DM-G. I would not recommend purchasing the DM-G any more because the MXM slots are all screwed up (in the wrong spots and not wired properly for 1080, cannot support 1080 SLI, etc.) and the GPU cooling is grossly inferior to the vapor chamber. I have a DM-G only as a novelty and proof of concept project. The extreme hardware mods needed for running just one 1080 in a DM-G are a real show-stopper, and I have no interest whatsoever in 1070 notebook GPU(s).

I'm guessing since the 9900k is 95w TDP it wont be a problem for the DM3 with the proper microcodes. Or is it too early to tell? I'm very interested in this upgrade but am not sure it will be possible.

Probably will be even with 95 TDP and solder, look at the 8950HK and its "45w" TDP
    One can hope

The 8950HK Crap Locked to "45w" TDP can't keep higher clocks than max 3.0GHz in fully load on all cores. 9900K is 4.7GHz all 8 cores.

Nothing is official here. People have successfully ran the 8700K in the DM3 IIRC, that's why the BIOS exists. Might want to ask someone with experience with it

It'll run very very hot on the stock CPU heatsink.

Although the 6700K is also a "95W" TDP CPU it doesn't actually pull anywhere near that at stock, it's turbo is basically nothing, 4.2 single 4.0 4-core over 4.0 base clock, and it would hardly ever be power limited even 95W let alone the +25% 112.5W standard turbo power limit.

The 9900K, since it has a much bigger difference between base 3.6 and maximum turbo 5.0 single 4.7 8-core, will be bouncing off the turbo power limit feeding 8 cores as fast as they'll go

Turbo and TDP all depends on the load scenario. The K of course lets you extend those stock limits.

Interesting, I guess I have to wait and see. Any chance of getting more info about the beefed up vrm I see some of the changes but am afraid I will miss something. I'm not the most knowledgeable on the subject as it is slightly above my level at this point. also if any one can tell me a good book that covers VRMs i would be interested in reading it.

I've watched all of buildzoids stuff on VRMs some time ago. Part of my interest in this mod are the skills that transfer to vrm design. I have some projects I'm working on that I'm pretty sure in the end is going to require me to come up with a custom power delivery. The rest of my interest is exactly what this thread is covering which is improving the multi tasking abilities of my laptop without having to be wasteful with natural resources and energy for manufacturing.

From an engineering point of view then keep the phase count to a sensible level with decent quality chips run around their peak efficiency range ;)

Ok, excuse the noobness, but shouldn’t it then be 2080? Perhaps 3080 soon? Sorry if I’m missing something, I’m reading on the phone. By the way, the dm3 is looking great. The classic VC (not the later VC that’s missing a heat pipe) is cooling well. I’m willing to swallow the horrid backlight bleed on my new dm3 4K screen. 4K is just crazy. I’ve read somewhere on the forum that the dm3 is better than the subsequent models. I made the mistake two years ago of buying the dm2 with 2 1070s instead of a dm3 with all the stuff, a mistake now partly corrected by buying the dm3 barebone a few days ago and migrating the chips into it. But I guess my question now is, where do we go with the dm3 to keep it competitive? It’s clear to me by now that I would have done better with 1080s for 4K gaming, but an upgrade to those would make no sense to me. 2080 are crazy expensive and would perform the same as 1080s, I assume, at lower tdp. Not worth the price tag. I’d do 9900k once I can afford it. Is there a bios for this? And out of strong curiosity, is the dm3 upgradable to rtx atm? @mr._fox
