Wow - So I'm new to the whole ODM thing... I'm upgrading to a new laptop from my zd 8000 and wanted something easily upgradeable in the future. My first thought was an alienware - and while they definitely have a major "cool factor" price wise I'm not sure I'm getting that much... For instance...

Sure, I'm not getting the free mousepad and alienware t-shirt, But this seems like a no brainer.
My only real issue is that I'd prefer to have the 1440x900 display. I think the higher resolution is a bit much for most applications.

I'd definitely recommend the 5790, and as far as the screen, I don't know where you configured that above, but with most Sager resellers (including XoticPC and PowerNotebooks) you can configure it with a WSXGA (1680x1050) screen; it's a compromise between WUXGA and WXGA.
-
Yeah - I'm really digging the 5790. Especially for the price. And the fact that I wouldn't be charged tax or shipping. I just wish they'd do something about that damn orange stripe - Its ugly!
I've explored a couple other resellers - I've looking at the Eurocom Website right now. It looks like some do have the lower resolution screen.
Are all of the 5790/m570Ru's Santa Rosa based? -
-
Hmmm - So I've been doing a bit more research and came across the Sager 5760. The specs look similiar..... But I Really like the case design of the 5760 with the Media Buttons in front.
It seems to to be an older model though and I'm haVing a bit of trouble finding one to configure. -
-
If you're not getting SLi then go for the Clevo
The WUXGA res is fine for me, in fact text, icons etc. is the same size as on my VAIO (1280x800 on a 13" screen), everything just appears smaller because there is SO MUCH SPACE! -
-
Even though I've recently ordered a 5790, I do agree that the 5760 looks better. I thought the orange stripe looked pretty hideous at first too, but it's grown on me over time. I also really like the brushed metal lid of the 5790, so it's not all bad. -
I didn't realize the 5760 would have issues with upgrading video - I'm guessing that means that there's no possiblity for upgrading to a DX10 card down the road. -
Its not a problem with the Sager 5760 (Clevo M570U) having with upgrading the videocard.... more than its the previous generation notebook.
The Clevo M570U is still considered one of the best 17" gaming notebooks.
Its using a Napa platform, which tops the RAM out at 3gigs and uses previous Merom Socket M Core 2 Duo's. And its got the previous Clevo videocard module design, which has recently switched to the standard MXM design in the new models (M570RU and D900C).
The notebook is currently being phased out with great prices... until the last units are sold. -
and the last place i saw a retailer configure a 5760 with the 7950 GTX gpu (as opposed to the Quadro, which Sager for some reason switched to) was pctorque.com
i know for sure that prostar dropped their 5760 model, guy over the phone said the 5790 was taking its place. -
The main reason for the Sager 5760 (M570U) has the Quadro 2500M [equivalant of its Geforce 7900GTX brother] is that:
- they (Clevo) are extremely low in stock of the previous 7950GTX videocard modules
But the system itself, with the Quadro 2500M is still the best bang for the buck 17" media workstation, as well as a gaming beast.... its just the future upgrades for it stops at the 7950GTX (old module) -
I've also ran across a few other resellers - velocity microworks, extreme, etc but know nothing about these companies - and their prices seemed horribly inflated - starting at greater than 2500. -
Your best chance is to contact "the big Clevo 3" of North America:
- Sager (as well as their resellers)
- Pro-Star/M-Tech
- Eurocom
I know Sager is still selling them... look at Powernotebooks' and XoticPC's sites.
Eurocom still sells them, but you need to contact them to bring down the price... yes, you can haggle with them
Pro-Star & M-Tech might also have some in stock or on order if you contact them to ask. -
